About Mr Niall Sullivan

Mr Niall Sullivan is a highly skilled and experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Hip and Trauma Surgeon. He has been a consultant since 2020 and has extensive expertise in hip replacement and complex hip revision surgery. He specialises in the management of hip arthritis and complex hip pathologies such as avascular necrosis, metastatic cancer, post-traumatic and developmental disorders requiring hip replacements. Mr Sullivan is also a revision hip surgeon with a focus on the management of infected hip replacements.

Mr Sullivan gained broad experience in Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery while completing his training in Bristol. He then completed a year of advanced arthroplasty training in Auckland, NZ, refining his hip replacement skills while learning new computer navigation and MAKO robot techniques for knee replacement surgery. He returned to Bristol for a fellowship in advanced hip arthroplasty and pelvic surgery before completing a final fellowship in Major Trauma at Southmead.

Mr Sullivan is the hip fracture lead at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Orthopaedic lead for Silver Trauma. He is one of four surgeons running the regional centre for prosthetic hip joint infection at Southmead Hospital. He was also employed by Health Education England as the Surgical Lead for Skills and Courses for the Severn Deanery, providing skills training for over 100 surgical trainees around the region four over 4 years.

Mr Sullivan is the clinical director of the Orthopaedic department at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

I practice at both Spire and Nuffield Hospitals with regular clinics and operating lists each week.

Mr Sullivan has received awards for his research during his training, and he continues to work with University of Bristol researchers to produce high-quality stem cell research and studies on prosthetic joint infection. He is also an active member of the British Hip Society.

As someone who has undergone hip surgery himself, Mr Sullivan can empathise with his patients suffering from hip pathology. He understands the impact of hip problems on patients' day-to-day lives and is committed to helping them through their treatment journey with his expertise and compassion.

I had a THR by Niall Sullivan 7 weeks ago. Everything from start to finish was excellent. Mr Sullivan explained everything thoroughly, I realise I asked questions that were already on his Q&A webpage as he had covered pretty much everything. Communication was quick and thorough and put me at ease. I cannot fault it. I have had a great recovery and I am extremely happy with the results - I would recommend Niall Sullivan and the team to anyone and if I need my LHR then I hope I am lucky enough to have him again.

After Admission I felt confident and reassured by clinical Staff that all was in good order. Mr Niall Sullivan and the Anaesthetist, Dr Ben Walton, visited me just prior to surgery to explain the procedure s involved. After surgery and recovery, I was well looked after by Nurses and Physios. The Catering Staff went out of their way to ensure I was happy with the food. I've phoned the Physios since returning home on several occasions and they've been very helpful with advice and guidance. Finally my thanks to Lydia, Mr Sullivans' Medical Secretary, for arranging my appointments. I really appreciate what you have all done for me. My best wishes.
