About Mr James Wright

Mr James Wright is a Consultant General and Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgeon with a specialist interest in bowel cancer and pelvic floor disorders. He qualified in 1998 from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, London, where he obtained a BSc (Hons) and MB BS. He gained broad early clinical experience across general surgery, emergency medicine, orthopaedics, and ENT surgery before undertaking a two-year research project in cancer diagnostics at the University of Essex, leading to the award of an MD in 2008.

Mr Wright completed six years of higher surgical training in the North East Thames region and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 2010. He was subsequently entered onto the GMC Specialist Register. Following a locum consultant role at Colchester Hospital, he was appointed as a substantive Consultant at Southend Hospital in 2011.

He has played a key role in developing services, including establishing the pelvic floor unit at Southend Hospital, supporting patients with complex bowel function disorders. He currently leads the South Essex Complex Pelvic Cancer Unit, overseeing multidisciplinary care for patients with advanced and recurrent pelvic malignancies.

Mr Wright has extensive experience in colorectal and general surgery, including keyhole procedures, endoscopy, and the management of a wide range of abdominal and bowel conditions. He has also held significant leadership and educational roles, including Royal College of Surgeons Tutor and Clinical Lead for General Surgery, and remains actively involved in surgical training.

I visited Mr Wright at Spire Wellesley. He was calm, knowledgeable and understanding of my concerns. He arranged further investigations and clearly explained the results, allowing me to take time to understand and ask questions. I could not have asked for a better, more thorough, informative experience.

I was GP referred to James for a suspected umbilical hernia. James concurred with that suspicion and I was booked for a CT scan a few days later. Follow up with James confirmed the umbilical hernia (and nothing else sinister) which he will resolve in a few weeks time as a day patient. James is always very efficient and approachable and explains everything that is happening. Having seen James previously for a successful gall bladder removal I was only ever going to be seeing him again for this issue.

I am very happy with my first visit today with Dr Wright. He explained everything very clearly & gave me time to explain my symptoms. I am feeling very positive about the prospect of getting to the bottom of my issues & having a better way of life day to day as an outcome.

If a colonoscopy can be a pleasant experience, then this is a close as you can get. James and all his staff were excellent. Really caring and very thoughtful. Also explained each step and made it as easy as possible. The facility spotless.

I went to see him in a bit of a panic as I was extremely anxious as the NHS GPs couldn’t diagnose my issue. With 5 minutes of the examination he had diagnosed the issue and put my mind at ease. Thank you very much!
