Mr Herman Fernando graduated in 1995 and then trained to qualify as a General Surgeon in India. He obtained his medical doctorate (MD) in basic science research in prostate cancer at Cardiff University and subsequently completed his specialist urological training in the West Midlands. During this period, he has published articles in various journals including Journal of Urology and Urology Oncology. He was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon in 2014 at the University Hospital or North Midlands NHS Trust.
His sub-specialist interests are manangement of Urinary Stone Disease and upper tract (kidney and ureter) cancers. His practice encompasses LASER surgery for treatment of kidney and ureteric stones as well as tumours. He also treats common urological conditions including prostate problems, screening tests for urological cancers (bladder/prostate/kidney/penile), scrotal surgery and diagnostic urology.
He regularly performs minimal access (robotic) surgery and endourological procedures for stones.
He is involved in Medical School activities at Keele University. He serves as an examiner for FRCS (Urology) for the Joint Committee on Intercollegiate Exams (JCIE) He is an editor of two books in urology and has also authored several chapters. He is the Training Programme Director in Urology for the West Midlands from February 2021. He is also a member of the Speciality Advisory Committe in Urology working under the Joinc Committee on Surgical Training (JCST).
