About Mr Harry Orlans
Harry Orlans is a Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon and Ophthalmologist with his NHS practice based at East & North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust. He specialises in all aspects of vitreoretinal and cataract surgery, including the surgical management of floaters, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, retinal detachment, vitreous haemorrhage, and complex or secondary lens surgery. In addition, he performs a wide range of laser procedures such as YAG laser posterior capsulotomy, laser retinopexy, pan-retinal photocoagulation, and laser peripheral iridotomy, and also sees general ophthalmology and emergency patients.
Mr Orlans has undertaken comprehensive training at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions. He graduated from the University of Cambridge with a First Class degree in Physiology and Neuroscience, ranking top in the University, before completing his Clinical Medicine training with Distinction at the University of Oxford. He completed his Ophthalmic Specialist Training within the North London Deanery and went on to undertake highly competitive fellowships in Vitreoretinal Surgery at St Thomas’ Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. He also holds a PhD from the University of Oxford, where his research focused on pioneering treatments for inherited retinal diseases.
His clinical and academic achievements have been recognised through numerous prestigious prizes and grants, including the Crombie Medal and the AMO Prize from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the Ruskell Medal from the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, and the Founder’s Cup from the Oxford Ophthalmological Congress. He has also been awarded research funding exceeding £1.5 million from the UK Medical Research Council.
Mr Orlans is actively involved in clinical research and education within vitreoretinal surgery, ophthalmology, and retinal science. He has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and currently serves as a Tutor in Ophthalmology at the University of Cambridge, contributing to the training of future ophthalmologists.

Harry performed a complex cataract operation on my eye, the complexity arose from a previous eye injury I had suffered as a child. The operation was a great success, and my eyesight has improved significantly. I felt at ease throughout the process snd would recommend him and his team to anyone considering having this operation.
Mr Orlans explained every aspect of my cataract treatment clearly from the very first consultation. I had originally planned to have advanced EDOF lenses, but following a specialised Pentacam scan, it became clear that the shape of my eyes made me unsuitable for this option. He therefore recommended mini-monovision using monofocals, whereby one eye is focused for distance and the other for nearer vision. This allows the two eyes to work together to provide a wider range of clear vision. The results have been excellent. I no longer need glasses for driving or most everyday activities, and I can comfortably use my computer, iPhone and iPad without them. I only need glasses for particularly small print. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the treatment I have received and grateful to him for the clear explanations and excellent outcome.
