Mr Geoffrey Roberts is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgeon based in Oxford, providing expert NHS and private care for general and upper GI surgical conditions. In his private practice at the Nuffield Oxford Manor Hospital he offers expert assessment and treatment for hernias, gallstones, abdominal pain, hiatus hernia, achalasia and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
He holds a substantive consultant post at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he is Clinical Lead for the Surgical Emergency Unit. His clinical practice encompasses the management of complex emergency and elective upper GI conditions, delivered with a strong focus on safe, personalised, and evidence-based care. As a clinician with a strong interest in emergency care he is experienced in managing the complex decision making and surgery seen at the acute end of surgery.
He has a special interest and expertise in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for hernias, gallstones, reflux and hiatus hernias and is particularly driven by helping people return to normal life as soon as possible after treatment.
He has particular expertise in complex "hot" cholecystectomy through his work in the Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU) in the Oxford John Radcliffe Hospital, one of the busiest and highest performing acute gallbladder services in the UK. Through his expertise in safe "hot" cholecystectomy he is ideally placed to offer high quality care for acute and long-standing gallbladder problems.
Mr Roberts completed his higher surgical training in the East of England and undertook a prestigious fellowship in oesophago-gastric surgery at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. Alongside his clinical training, he completed a PhD at the Institute of Metabolic Science, University of Cambridge. His research examined the impact of stomach and oesophageal surgery on appetite regulation, glucose control, and long-term quality of life and he has lectured internationally on improving quality of life after major surgery.
He studied medicine at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and Merton College, Oxford, graduating BMBCh with distinction from the University of Oxford in 2007. After finishing his core surgical training at Cambridge, he spent time volunteering as a surgeon at St Francis’ Hospital in Katete, Zambia. As a volunteer surgeon he provided care and training as part of a local and international team of clinicians in a rural hospital, with a particular focus on long-term improvements in patient safety and burns care.

Fantastic care from first contact to discharge. Really good, clear and quick communication both Mr Robert’s and his secretary. As someone who has suffered from PTSD from previous surgery, Mr Robert’s and his team went out of their way to remove my triggers and explain everything clearly while undergoing this procedure and treatment plan. Listened clearly throughout all contact and I cannot recommend enough!
My experience for a hernia operation was a positive one. I was very well looked after at the Manor hospital all the staff were friendly, professional and clear on what was happening. My surgeon explained everything I needed to know and made me feel very at ease about the procedure. Four weeks on I have made pretty much a full recovery and I’m very happy with the outcome. Thank you
Mr Roberts and the Nuffield Health team provided fantastic care, were thorough with explanations, and helped me to relax as much as possible through the whole process.
I appreciate how Mr Roberts ensures continuity of care and follow-up. Any post-operative questions or concerns are quickly and kindly addressed. Big shout out to Mr R's secretary Natasha for her attention and efficiency. I have felt very well looked-after, thank you!
I had a really positive experience, from my initial consultation to surgery and post surgery support. Time was taken to explain the procedure and answer any questions I had.
I consulted Geoffrey Roberts at The Manor Hospital, Headington on 12th December 2025 regarding a hernia repair. In the circumstances, it was about as positive experience as it could possibly have been. He was friendly but professional, took a detailed history (which he remembered when I next met him on the day of the operation) and gave a very clear explanation of his diagnosis and the procedure for the repair. He filled me with unexpected confidence and was timely in confirming his advice in writing. I had the operation on 16th January 2026. It went extremely well and my recovery was swift and uncomplicated. He 'phoned me the day after the operation to make sure I was OK - for which I was grateful. I saw him for the post-op consultation on 28th January 2026, when I was discharged. The whole process was efficient and professional but at the same time strongly indicative of his clear investment in patient care. I cannot recommend him too highly.
Dr Roberts was excellent at explaining what the procedure entailed. His calm and extensive knowledge was quite evident which put me at ease. His manner in dealing with questions was one of understanding and no question was ignored . Post surgery and the follow up consultation was excellent once again, with Dr Roberts easily explaining once again how my body was reacting to the surgery.
It was very much a good experience - Mr Roberts was insightful and wrote to my GP to further progress investigations into my symptoms.
A very talented surgeon with a fabulous bedside manner. I would recommend to my own family.
