Mr Geoffrey Roberts is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hernia Surgeon based in Oxford, providing expert NHS and private care for abdominal wall hernias and Upper GI surgical conditions. In his private practice at the Nuffield Oxford Manor Hospital he offers expert assessment and treatment for hernias, gallstones, abdominal pain, hiatus hernia, achalasia and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
He holds a substantive consultant post at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he is Clinical Lead for the Surgical Emergency Unit. His clinical practice encompasses the management of complex emergency and elective upper GI conditions, delivered with a strong focus on safe, personalised, and evidence-based care. As a clinician with a strong interest in emergency care he is experienced in managing the complex decision making and surgery seen at the acute end of surgery.
He has a special interest and expertise in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for hernias, gallstones, reflux and hiatus hernias and is particularly driven by helping people return to normal life as soon as possible after treatment.
He has particular expertise in complex "hot" cholecystectomy through his work in the Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU) in the Oxford John Radcliffe Hospital, one of the busiest and highest performing acute gallbladder services in the UK. Through his expertise in safe "hot" cholecystectomy he is ideally placed to offer high quality care for acute and long-standing gallbladder problems.
Mr Roberts completed his higher surgical training in the East of England and undertook a prestigious fellowship in oesophago-gastric surgery at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. Alongside his clinical training, he completed a PhD at the Institute of Metabolic Science, University of Cambridge. His research examined the impact of stomach and oesophageal surgery on appetite regulation, glucose control, and long-term quality of life and he has lectured internationally on improving quality of life after major surgery.
He studied medicine at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and Merton College, Oxford, graduating BMBCh with distinction from the University of Oxford in 2007. After finishing his core surgical training at Cambridge, he spent time volunteering as a surgeon at St Francis’ Hospital in Katete, Zambia. As a volunteer surgeon he provided care and training as part of a local and international team of clinicians in a rural hospital, with a particular focus on long-term improvements in patient safety and burns care.

Outstanding personal customer service throughout including the all important administration.
I felt very well informed from start to finish which helped ease any of my pre-procedure anxieties. Found Mr Roberts to be very amaiable and the same applies to his support team. My procedure all went according to plan and, the best part of all, I woke up at the end of it and am well on the way to making a good recovery! Would be happy to entrust myself to the whole team should I need to again.
So glad to have chosen Geoff Roberts to perform my cholecystectomy. The procedure in my case was not quite as straightforward as I had imagined but his expertise and professionalism were beyond doubt and his aftercare was above and beyond. Such a nice guy!
I went to Mr Robert’s with little expectation of what could and should be done for my symptoms. We spoke at length over several in person and telephone appointments, as it was a big decision to go ahead with surgery. Mr Roberts was open and honest about the possible outcome and I felt fully informed. The outcome of the surgery has been more than I could have hoped for, I feel very grateful for Mr Roberts honesty leading up to the surgery and all of his help after. In short, a huge thank you to the whole team, who were all fantastic. Also a note to Natasha, Mr Roberts secretary, she is so efficient and helpful, I had to make several changes and she was really happy to help. A real team effort from hospital to admin!
Mr Roberts removed my gall bladder. I made a swift recovery, requiring no pain medication after 48 hours, the wounds healed quickly and I was back to normal life after 1 week. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
From the outset of an initial meeting, the actual surgery (including post-op support) right through to discharge I can't recommend Mr Roberts highly enough. He was excellent throughout - a very talented surgeon and a really nice chap.
Mr. Robert’s was very personable and professional and put me at ease throughout the consultation process both pre and post procedure.
I met with Mr Roberts for an advisory consultation about a large hiatus hernia. I found the meeting hugely helpful. He explained very clearly with a detailed CT scan the issue I had and the pros and cons of an operation, and recommended a "management" plan for the next year or so. I was extremely grateful for the time he gave me and the clarity of the explanation.
Fantastic care from first contact to discharge. Really good, clear and quick communication both Mr Robert’s and his secretary. As someone who has suffered from PTSD from previous surgery, Mr Robert’s and his team went out of their way to remove my triggers and explain everything clearly while undergoing this procedure and treatment plan. Listened clearly throughout all contact and I cannot recommend enough!
A very talented surgeon with a fabulous bedside manner. I would recommend to my own family.
