Dr Emma Matthews

Dr Emma Matthews is an accomplished Consultant Neurologist who provides comprehensive clinical evaluation and expert care for patients experiencing a wide spectrum of neurological conditions. Specialising in neuromuscular health, Dr Matthews delivers individualised, patient-centred care aimed at improving daily function and long-term well-being. She prioritises clear, open communication, ensuring that patients and their families feel reassured, fully informed, and actively involved in every decision regarding their treatment strategy.

Her main clinical interests focus on the diagnosis and management of complex nerve and muscle conditions, including genetic neuromuscular disorders, myotonic conditions, periodic paralysis, and muscle channelopathies. Dr Matthews also utilises specialised diagnostic procedures such as electromyography to evaluate nerve and muscle function accurately. In addition, she plays an active role in running transition services for young adults moving from paediatric care into adult neurological care, alongside incorporating genomic medicine into individualised treatment plans.

Dr Matthews earned her medical degree (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) from the University of Aberdeen before completing a Doctor of Philosophy in Neuroscience at University College London. She subsequently completed higher specialist training in neurology across leading academic teaching centres.
