Dr. Glyn Thomas is an award-winning Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at the Bristol Heart Institute. He trained at University College London Medical School and worked in various London teaching hospitals before returning to university to begin research into the causes of abnormal heart rhythms. After gaining his doctorate from Cambridge University in 2006 he returned to London to sub-specialise in heart rhythm treatment at St Bartholomew's Hospital.
Dr. Thomas was appointed as Consultant Cardiologist & Cardiac Electrophysiologist at the Bristol Heart Institute in 2009. He has a special interest in treating heart rhythm problems such as atrial fibrillation and performs several hundred ablation procedures per year. He practises a patient-centred approach, ensuring individuals needs are understood and anxieties accommodated, incorporating an understanding of patient's lifestyles into his treatment plan. He recognises the importance of non-pharmacological treatments such as diet and exercise. He has a wealth of experience in the cardiac aspects of Dysautonomia including Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and increasingly, the post-viral, multisystem disorder known as 'Long COVID'.
Dr. Thomas is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and has also written two books, Cardiology in Focus (Churchill Livingstone, 2004) and Ready Reference: Cardiology (Elsevier 2010). He has over 100 publications in scientific press specifically relating to the mechanisms and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, and is a regular contributor to popular media.
In addition to Cardiology, he has a special interest in Critical Care Medicine. He undertook further training in Anaesthesia/Paediatrics/Trauma and gained the Diploma in Immediate Medical Care, Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh in 2017. He is now a full-time Critical Care Doctor with Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, respoding to medical emergencies/accidents across the South West by helicopter or rapid response car. He also supports the life-saving work of the South West Ambulance Service in a voluntary capacity as an active responder for Bravo Medics charity.

Easiest 5 star review I've ever given! I've had a horrible time with hospitals and cardiology in general since being told I have an arrhythmia in 2024, which meant I honestly wasn't expecting much when I was referred to Dr. Thomas. So I was surprised when I met a doctor who took the time to listen to me. He didn't rush me, he explained everything carefully, and when it came to changing my medication he explained why he was doing it and even asked if I was ok with that. He's been the first cardiologist who I've felt has actually cared about his patient. Dr. Thomas has also been the first doctor who's noticed when my medication (Flecainide) dose was too high for me. My previous cardiologist only kept increasing my dose, something that Dr. Thomas advised me was actually dangerous for me. Since coming off of Flecainide, I've gone from having long runs of VT multiple times a week, sometimes daily, to having much smaller runs of VT maybe once a week to every two weeks. I have Dr. Thomas to thank for that, as I never would've thought my medication could've been the thing making my arrhythmia worse. Overall he is a caring and knowledgeable doctor who makes the time for his patients. If you're looking at these reviews because you're a new patient, then from one patient to another I promise you're in good hands.
Very welcoming & kind, made me feel at ease. Clearly explained, diagnosis and treatment plan going forward
Dr Thomas explained things in a way which was very easy for me to follow . Also answered my questions in the same way . A very pleasant man . extremely easy to talk to .
Very professional, clear in both advice and expectations. Highly recommended
Excellent consultation - very helpful and informative doctor
Visit was to access my irregular heart beat and occasionally low pulse rate. Dr Thomas gave me assurance and confidence that everything was normal.
We are really grateful to Glyn Thomas who recently completed cardiac ablation at BHI for my son’s arrhythmia.. My son had had 4 previous unsuccessful cardiac ablations for his fascicular VT, and we were feeling doubtful it could be treated. This time it looks like it might have worked! Dr Thomas was really nice and takes time to explain the procedure and answer our questions and we would really recommend him.
Dr Thomas undertook an ablation in June 2024 which has had good outcomes. He saw me more recently (February 2026) with regards to concerns over abnormalities in my Kardia ECG recordings taken at home. He was very helpful and able to reassure me following review of my health.
A breathe of fresh air. Listened to me , very courteous, explained solutions to the issues clearly . Checked for my understanding and informed me of the way forward.
Dr Thomas was very kind and personable - he made me feel instantly at ease!

CardiologistDr Thomas is an esteemed colleague who I’ve had the pleasure and opportunity to work with over many years. He is an excellent operator and skilled electrophysiologist. He treats many satisfied patients and doctors who have also become his patients. He has carried out substantial research in the field of cardiac arrhythmias the same field he specialises in his daily clinical work. I am delighted to submit this recommendation for Dr Thomas.
