Dr Edward Duncan is a Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist at Spire Bristol Hospital and at the Bristol Heart Institute where he has served as lead cardiologist and clinical lead for Cardiac Electrophysiology. He specialises in the treatment of abnormal heart rhythms and offers a full range of procedures, including catheter ablation, pacemaker and defibrillator implantation, and cardiac resynchronisation therapy. He has particular expertise in the catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (using Pulsed Field Abation, Cryoablation and Radiofrequency ablation) and also manages inherited cardiac conditions (such as cardiomyopathy and channelopathy) through a dedicated NHS clinic at the Bristol Heart Institute.
He graduated in medicine from Downing College, Cambridge University in 1998 and went on to specialise in cardiology in 2002. In 2007, he was awarded a PhD from King’s College London and later completed a Master’s degree in Sports Cardiology at St George’s, University of London, in 2018. His advanced training included placements at internationally recognised centres such as St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London and L’Hôpital Haut-Lévêque in Bordeaux, France. Appointed as a Consultant in 2011, Dr Duncan has continued to expand his expertise, supported by a scholarship from the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) to further his training in sports cardiology.
Alongside his clinical work, he provides care for survivors of cardiac arrest and screens family members for inherited cardiac conditions. He has developed a strong interest in the management of arrhythmias in athletes, including veteran athletes, and is trained in pre-participation screening. He is a member of the Heart Rhythm Society (US), the British Cardiovascular Society, the British Society of Echocardiography, the British Medical Association and the Medical Defence Union.

Very clear throughout my appointments, including reasons behind testing and what I could expect. Ultimately a reassuring outcome, delivered professionally but crucially also personably.
Review 3 months after ablation, next steps explained and although discharged for 2 years felt informed what to do if needed further treatment
Dr Duncan put me at ease from my first appointment. The atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter procedures were clearly explained and I was much reassured by his experience. His care goes beyond normal expectations and I am extremely grateful to him for restoring my health.
Dr Duncan, throughout has been excellent in explaining the procedure and giving options, which enabled me to make an informed decision on the way forward, the latest visit again backed this up, all I can say I am very pleased with the whole process and thanks to Spire and Bupa staff
Dr Duncan and the nurse who took my ECG were very professional with a good bedside manner. The advice was clear and helpful and I was happy with my visit.
Absolutely charming. I was just beginning to feel forgotten when Doctor Duncan appeared with his smile and welcome and I soon forgot he was running almost half an hour late.
Absolutely the most professional people I have met from start to finish. From admission to discharge . The whole team were amazing. My only criticism would be the advice on aftercare when your home .I've suffered central chest pain and shortness of breath episodes and actually googled the official NHS heart website to find out if this is normal.
Overall very good but just a little lack of communication with regard to an issue over my operation but was sorted and very happy. Dr Duncan was very professional and explained everything well and clearly.
Dr Duncan was very kind, caring and understanding of our financial position. He took the time to explain my health issues and which routes we should take to resolve the problems in a very clear and positive manner. He made me feel very relaxed/relieved during my consultation. Thank You
Ed is a superb electrophysiologist and cardiologist. He is great with patients and highly skilled at all procedures related to his speciality (ablation, pacing and complex devices). I trained and worked with him for many years and would recommend him highly to anyone with rhythm problems
