About

Dr. Glyn Thomas is an award-winning Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at the Bristol Heart Institute. He trained at University College London Medical School and worked in various London teaching hospitals before returning to university to begin research into the causes of abnormal heart rhythms. After gaining his doctorate from Cambridge University in 2006 he returned to London to sub-specialise in heart rhythm treatment at St Bartholomew's Hospital.

Dr. Thomas was appointed as Consultant Cardiologist & Cardiac Electrophysiologist at the Bristol Heart Institute in 2009. He has a special interest in treating heart rhythm problems such as atrial fibrillation and performs several hundred ablation procedures per year. He practises a patient-centred approach, ensuring individuals needs are understood and anxieties accommodated, incorporating an understanding of patient's lifestyles into his treatment plan. He has a wealth of experience in the cardiac aspects of Dysautonomia including Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and increasingly, the post-viral, multisystem disorder known as 'Long COVID'.

Dr. Thomas is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and has also written two books, Cardiology in Focus (Churchill Livingstone, 2004) and Ready Reference: Cardiology (Elsevier 2010). He has over 100 publications in scientific press specifically relating to the mechanisms and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, and is a regular contributor to popular media.

In addition to Cardiology, he has a special interest in Critical Care Medicine. He undertook further training in Anaesthesia/Paediatrics and gained the Diploma in Immediate Medical Care, Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh in 2017. He is now a full-time member of the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, respoding to medical emergencies/accidents across the South West by helicopter or rapid response car.

Explanation

I first saw Dr Thomas in 2012, when performed a heart ablation. I’m told that to last 12 years is a “very good result.” At a recent consultation, he made it very clear that it would be easy to check the original work and repair the ablation. Very happy with his confidence and agreement to carry out the procedure. Very empathetic to my situation.

I had a months stay in hospital at the end of last year, following the early birth of my son and an unexpected diagnosis of heart failure. It was a complete shock and was a really upsetting time for me. I was booked in for an ablation with Dr Thomas before I was allowed to be discharged. To say I was scared is an understatement. But I was immediately put at ease by Dr Thomas. He [and his team] were so friendly and reassuring, I felt the safest I'd felt during my whole hospital stay. The procedure went smoothly and was relatively painless- just a little discomfort. I suffered a lot of trauma during my stay in hospital but my experience with Dr Thomas was faultless. In fact, I wish I'd had his calming influence and positive outlook from the very beginning of my hospital stay. He made a huge difference and treated me like a person and not just 'the next patient'. I'm so glad there's a way I can say thank you.

This is the second procedure I have experienced with Dr Thomas ( the first was 6 years ago). My latest symptoms had previously been attributed by other medical professionals to "anxiety!". He is patient, professional, explains everything in simple terms and reassures you about the procedures he is about to undertake. Since my latest operation I have realised how much my symptoms had impacted on my lifestyle during the previous 18 months. I cannot thank him enough and have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone requiring a cardiologist.

Excellent experience from first consultation through to the conclusion of my treatment which included a heart procedure. From my initial ECG Dr Thomas diagnosed my heart issue, which was very reassuring and at no time during my interactions with him did I leave not feeling totally confident in him.

Huge thanks to Dr Thomas, I can’t thank him enough. After suffering for many years with various arrhythmias I am now free of symptoms and in stable sinus rhythm without medication (something I’d given up believing I’d have again). He was patient, professional and very easy to talk to. He explained everything in plain English, was understanding of the impacts of symptoms and invested in helping me. It was so good to have someone listen, understand my symptoms and the impact they had on my daily life and who didn’t give up on fixing the problem. I’d recommend him to anyone having arrhythmia problems.

Dr Thomas is an esteemed colleague who I’ve had the pleasure and opportunity to work with over many years. He is an excellent operator and skilled electrophysiologist. He treats many satisfied patients and doctors who have also become his patients. He has carried out substantial research in the field of cardiac arrhythmias the same field he specialises in his daily clinical work. I am delighted to submit this recommendation for Dr Thomas.

It gives me great pleasure to recommend my colleague Dr Glyn Thomas for his expertise in the field of electrophysiology especially catheter ablation procedures for atrial fibrillation and flutter. Dr Thomas is the leading electrophysiologist in SW of England and probably one of the best in the country who is highly respected by his colleagues and patients. I have known Dr Thomas for over 10 years and referred majority of my patients especially with arrhythmias and complex cases to Glyn, both in the NHS and privately. His clinical assessments and advice are always sought after with extremely good procedural success rates. My patients whom I refer, find him an extremely charming man, with excellent bedside manners and very approachable. They have all been very satisfied with what he has done for them. I strongly recommend Dr Thomas to any patient who wishes to see him for an opinion or procedure.
