Mr. Steven Harsum is a highly skilled UK-trained ophthalmologist specialising in advanced eye surgery, with a practice based in Surrey. During his medical training, he was selected for the prestigious MBPhD program at University College London, combining accelerated medical studies with a second degree and a three-year research doctorate (PhD). His doctoral research focused on groundbreaking wound healing studies, sparking his passion for microsurgery.
Following his specialisation in Ophthalmology, Mr. Harsum trained at several leading hospitals in North and South London, culminating in a fellowship in medical and surgical retina at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital. His expertise encompasses procedures such as micro-incision cataract and vitreoretinal surgery, which he has introduced at Epsom & St. Helier Hospitals. He performs sutureless 25-gauge day-case vitrectomy, treating a variety of conditions including floaters, vitreous hemorrhage, diabetic retinal scarring, detached retinas, epiretinal membranes, and macular holes. His cataract surgeries employ sub-2mm micro-incision and femtosecond laser techniques, which are less traumatic, faster, and safer, often eliminating the need for injections or post-operative glasses. Remarkably, he is the first surgeon in the UK to combine laser cataract surgery with vitrectomy.
Mr. Harsum has been instrumental in advancing macular degeneration treatments at Epsom & St. Helier Hospitals, implementing efficient one-stop clinics and robust safety systems. As the clinical lead of the diabetic retinal screening service in Sutton & Merton, he has ensured high standards and regularly acts as an external quality assurance inspector for other UK eye units. Previously, he held leadership roles such as Clinical Lead, College Tutor, and Audit Lead at Epsom & St. Helier, focusing on enhancing patient care quality and training future ophthalmologists.
A dedicated educator, Mr. Harsum integrates modern technology, including surgical videos and advanced imaging, into his tutorials. His commitment to global health is evident in his charity work in countries like Guyana and Burma, where he has treated complex cases of cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, and glaucoma, restoring sight to countless individuals.

The use of drops and a temporary lens was completely comfortable.
I found Mr Harsum to be very pleasant and very clear and honest in his explanations and advice. I already knew him to be an experienced and skilled eye surgeon and my visit and surgery went very smoothly and with an excellent result.
The service and information was very reassuring considering the delicate operation to the eyes
As always, it was a pleasure being seen by Mr Harsum for my check-up. His pleasant and reassuring manner cannot be beaten.
I was extremely pleased with the care I received for the treatment of my cataracts in both eyes. Mr Harsum made one feel at ease and comfortable and explained everything about the procedure with clarity and what options were available for the replacement lens. The procedure was amazingly quick and no discomfort was felt during or after the procedure.
Thank you Doctor for treating my eye. Very prompt, professional in explaining the details. Excellent service and check-ups, follow-ups done by the surgery team.
I would highly recommend Mr. Steve Harsum to anyone needing expert eye care. Mr. Harsum first saw me in March 2013 for a retinal detachment. His prompt diagnosis, clear explanation of the situation, and skilled surgical intervention were outstanding. The procedure was handled with great professionalism. In September 2020, when I developed Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) in my other eye, Mr. Harsum again took over my care. He started my treatment promptly and has continued to manage it ever since. His calm, reassuring manner and willingness to answer all my questions have made what could have been a very worrying condition much easier to deal with. I have complete confidence in Mr. Harsum and have
On 14th February 2025,1 underwent bilateral cataract surgery, elsewhere, with Toric multifocal lenses. I recently had my optometrist independently review my eyesight ,with both reading and distance and astigmatism correction. It was not possible to achieve the standard of eyesight possible at end '24. I identified Mr Steven Harsum as an independent eye surgeon, August '25 and on 4th February '26, in agreement with myself, a replacement lens Op was undertaken. but it was not possible to separate the Toric lens from the capsule, without incurring considerable risk / further operations. The Op was stopped after over 1 hour. My original standard of poor eyesight was restored. The lessons to be learnt for patients undergoing Cataract procedures, should be able to check their skills / experience for compatibility of multifocal lenses, for the patient, on the same day. Also, the surgery used the biometer topography rather than the more accurate Pentacam measurements.
All was explained very well, and the operation that I had in both eyes at different times, went well with minimal of discomfort, thank you all involved, and I would recommend the service to those who would ask
Dr Harsum was absolutely amazing. I am truly grateful for the exceptional care and support I received. His quick and accurate diagnosis of my detached retina made all the difference , without his prompt action, I could have been facing a long‑term and serious condition. The laser surgery was arranged very quickly, and the whole procedure took only a few minutes, which brought me great reassurance during a worrying time. I cannot thank Dr Harsum enough for his kindness, professionalism, and expertise. I highly recommend him.
Mr Harsum is an expert in his field. He provides the highest level of care for his patients. He is skilled, friendly and communicates clearly. I would recommend him to friends and family without hesitation.
