Mr Steven Harsum

Mr. Steven Harsum is a highly skilled UK-trained ophthalmologist specialising in advanced eye surgery, with a practice based in Surrey. During his medical training, he was selected for the prestigious MBPhD program at University College London, combining accelerated medical studies with a second degree and a three-year research doctorate (PhD). His doctoral research focused on groundbreaking wound healing studies, sparking his passion for microsurgery.

Following his specialisation in Ophthalmology, Mr. Harsum trained at several leading hospitals in North and South London, culminating in a fellowship in medical and surgical retina at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital. His expertise encompasses procedures such as micro-incision cataract and vitreoretinal surgery, which he has introduced at Epsom & St. Helier Hospitals. He performs sutureless 25-gauge day-case vitrectomy, treating a variety of conditions including floaters, vitreous hemorrhage, diabetic retinal scarring, detached retinas, epiretinal membranes, and macular holes. His cataract surgeries employ sub-2mm micro-incision and femtosecond laser techniques, which are less traumatic, faster, and safer, often eliminating the need for injections or post-operative glasses. Remarkably, he is the first surgeon in the UK to combine laser cataract surgery with vitrectomy.

Mr. Harsum has been instrumental in advancing macular degeneration treatments at Epsom & St. Helier Hospitals, implementing efficient one-stop clinics and robust safety systems. As the clinical lead of the diabetic retinal screening service in Sutton & Merton, he has ensured high standards and regularly acts as an external quality assurance inspector for other UK eye units.
