Dr Shoaib Hamid

Personal Profile

Dr Shoaib Hamid is a Consultant Cardiologist with more than thirty years of
experience as a doctor. He manages all aspects of cardiovascular disease
including ischaemic heart disease, arrhythmias, hypertension and heart failure.

Training

Dr Hamid qualified in 1994 from St George’s Hospital Medical School, London. He undertook his general cardiology training in the London Deanery Training Programme and completed his sub-specialty fellowship training in Arrhythmias and Device Therapy at St George’s and Guys and St Thomas’ Hospitals. He has attained accreditation from
the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE) as a Certified Cardiac Device Specialist.

Fellowship and Research

During his cardiology training he was awarded a British Heart Foundation Research Fellowship which was undertaken at the Inherited Cardiac Conditions Unit at St George’s Hospital Medical School, London, a national referral unit. Dr Hamid investigated and
gained clinical experience in inherited heart conditions causing cardiomyopathies and sudden cardiac death for which he was awarded his MD degree by the University of London.

He has continued his contribution to research as a local principal investigator in multi-centre clinical trials. He has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented his
research at national and international meetings on cardiomyopathies, pacemakers
and cardiac resynchronisation therapy.

Clinical Appointment

Dr Hamid is a Consultant Cardiologist at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, part of the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, where he delivers specialist inpatient and outpatient care.

He is the Clinical Lead for the Arrhythmia, Devices, and Inherited Cardiovascular Diseases services. In this role, he established a multi-disciplinary team of specialist arrhythmia nurses and cardiac physiologists, introduced a local complex cardiac pacemaker and defibrillator implantation service, and founded an Inherited Cardiac Conditions clinic in 2018. He performs a high volume of pacemaker and complex device
implantations and chairs the Arrhythmia multi-disciplinary team meeting.

Dr Hamid served as Clinical Director for Cardiology services across Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital for 8 years. During his tenure he collaborated with commissioning groups and healthcare professionals to improve and develop local services. In this role he contributed as a member of the South London
Cardiac Steering Group to ensure equitable cardiovascular care across the region

In recognition of his contributions, he hasreceived multiple Clinical Excellence Awards and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP).

Teaching

Dr Hamid is also deeply committed to medical education. He serves as the Educational Lead for the Vascular Block for King's College medical students and is an Honorary
Senior Clinical Lecturer at the King's College London GKT School of Medical Education, where he has received letters of commendation and a "Best Teacher" award. Additionally, he serves as an Associate Clinical Professor and Academic Clinical Lead for medical students from the University of Nicosia.

He acts as an Educational Supervisor for postgraduate trainees and personally trains
cardiology registrars in advanced device implantation techniques.

Clinical Interests

Dr Hamid manages heart conditions including:

• Ischaemic heart disease (coronary artery disease, chest pain, angina and heart attacks)
• Hypertension (high blood pressure)
• Heart failure (breathlessness and fluid retention)

His specialist interest is in heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias) including:

• Investigation and management of palpitations, dizzy spells, syncope and blackouts
• Management of arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardias, ectopic heart beats, slow and fast heart rhythm disorders
• Implantation of pacemakers including conduction system pacing for slow heart rates (bradycardias and heart block) and heart failure (cardiac resynchronisation therapy)
• Implantation of defibrillators (ICDs) for ventricular arrhythmias
