Dr Rehan Haidry, BSc (Hons), MBBS, MD, FRCP
Consultant Gastroenterologist, Interventional Endoscopist, and Clinical Lead for Endoscopy at the Cleveland Clinic London
Dr Rehan Haidry is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Interventional Endoscopist at Cleveland Clinic London, one of the world’s most prestigious and technologically advanced hospitals, where he serves as Clinical Lead for Endoscopy. Dr Haidry is recognised as one of the world’s most respected and pioneering doctors in the field of
Interventional Endoscopy. He was awarded the Hopkins Prize for Endoscopy in June 2024, recognising his innovation and outstanding contribution to endoscopic research. He is a serving member of the BSG (British Society of Gastroenterology) endoscopy committee, ASGE (American Society of Gastrointestinal endoscopy) research committee, ISDE training lead and EFS (European Foregut Society).
He has been a consultant since 2010 and now leads a research team at Cleveland Clinic London. Dr Haidry’s clinical and academic focus is on minimally invasive endoscopic treatments for benign and malignant disorders of the foregut. He is a UK leader in the management of Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal cancer, offering advanced therapeutic procedures including EMR (endoscopic mucosal resection), ESD (endoscopic submucosal dissection), radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation and the use of AI in endoscopy.
Dr Haidry also performs Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF) for acid reflux and is among the first UK endoscopists to offer the bariatric endoscopic ESG (Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty) for weight loss. He is the UK’s leading expert in the endoscopic management of Zenker’s Diverticulum. Dr Haidry was one of the leading gastroenterologists to offer permanent endoscopic treatment for achalasia (POEM) and gastroparesis (GPOEM); he has performed hundreds of successful procedures to date. He has several active research studies in these areas underway at CCL.
Dr Haidry is an innovator in endoscopic procedures for type 2 diabetes and his research in the field spans a decade. He was the principal investigator for REVITA the first study of its kind, investigating Duodenal Mucosal Resurfacing (DMR), and he continues to lead clinical trials in metabolic endoscopy. Most recently he has performed the PIMA (Proximal Intestinal Mucosal Ablation) procedure (a novel radiofrequency vapour ablation technique) on type 2 diabetes patients as part of a global clinical trial.
Dr Haidry has pioneered access to the novel RESET procedure at the Cleveland Clinic. This minimally invasive and reversible procedure provides an alternative to conventional bariatric surgery. It involves placement of an innovative device in the upper small intestine to achieve weight loss, improve insulin sensitivity and glycaemic control.
Prior to his appointment at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr Haidry practised at University College Hospital, London, (UCLH) regarded as one of country's leading teaching and research hospitals. He was the clinical lead for endoscopy and gastroenterology before he moved on to CCL. His expertise encompasses such areas as general gastroenterology and interventional with a particular interest in the management and treatment of acid reflux symptoms and Barrett's. Along with his commitment to clinical practice, he played a pivotal role in high-impact oesophageal cancer research.
While at UCLH, Dr Haidry took part in the coordination of Europe's largest patient registry, the UK HALO radiofrequency ablation registry (which collected the outcomes of oesophageal cancer patients), presenting his findings at international conferences.
Dr Haidry initially trained at St Mary's Hospital in London and subsequently completed his gastroenterology training in North East London. Following this, he undertook a 2-year research fellowship at UCLH, examining novel diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic techniques in the upper gastrointestinal tract.
Dr Rehan Haidry's unparalleled commitment to gastroenterology, both in the clinic and in the research setting, has supplied him with the skillset to ensure the highest standards of treatment and care for his patients.
