My recent visit was the second of two: a follow-up consultation following an initial consultation and a CT scan and lung-related tests that generated data for the follow-up. Professor George was warm and respectful. I’m a reasonably fit 76-year-old man. It’s not unusual for me to feel patronised or infantilised, which I never felt in Professor George’s presence, and is the reason I emphasise respectful. In my first consultation, he was extremely thorough, paying careful attention to details of my symptoms and recent and past history. No detail seemed unimportant to him. More than once, he referred to his emphasis on data (rather than speculation) as the basis for his judgments. In the follow-up consultation, Professor George talked me through the data from my scan and tests. All the results were benign-to-positive. His judgment was that I didn’t need any further tests or treatment. I can self-monitor for future symptoms and bring to his attention any that arise again. He’d use the cumulative data base for any judgments about future treatment. I’ve got used to expecting an emphasis on consultant-patient transactions rather than relationships. To my delight, my experience with Professor George felt more trusted relationship-based than transactional.

He explained the next steps clearly and took the time to dictate a summary of our discussion during the consultation to ensure nothing was missed and that we were fully aligned.
