Dr Patrick Mbaya

Dr Patrick Mbaya graduated with a medical degree from the University of Manchester. He then went on to obtain further qualifications – both an MSc and an MD in Psychiatry. He worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Wythenshawe Hospital in South Manchester before deciding to move to a different hospital within the same NHS Trust. In the summer of 2013, he became the Lead Consultant for Addiction at the Priory Hospital Altrincham, where he currently works. He also acts as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer for Psychiatry at South Manchester University Hospital.

Every Monday and Thursday, Dr Mbaya runs a day clinic, seeing and treating patients with addictions, general adult psychiatric conditions and affective disorders. He has particular special interests in addiction and mood disorders, such as depression.

Dr Mbaya has written numerous papers on the topics of treatment-resistant depression and psychopharmacology, which have been internationally recognised and published. He is also the author of the high acclaimed novel ‘My Brain is Out of Control: Memoirs of a Doctor as a Patient', in which he provides a unique insight into battling serious physical and mental illness whilst practising as a doctor.
