Nigel Stephens was recruited from Cambridge University, where he was a Lecturer in Medicine, to lead a newly built Cardiac Centre in Northwick Park Hospital over 20 years ago. This centre became successful and high-performing, with excellent outcomes. He brings these same qualities to his private practice, providing accessible and personalised care for people with heart disease. He is particularly committed to helping patients return to an active life following episodes of serious illness, so they can enjoy the benefits of physical activity and exercise.
Dr. Stephens oversees all aspects of cardiology care for patients 16 and older, including valvular heart disease, hypertension, cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and cardiac rhythm abnormalities. He also offers interventional procedures such as coronary angioplasty and stenting. He has strong and reliable communications with a group of colleagues who are based at Northwick Park Hospital; referrals to specialist cardiac surgery or electrophysiology services are discussed weekly in a meeting that Dr. Stephens chairs himself.
Dr. Stephens provides comprehensive care for patients with complex cardiovascular conditions, including the use of rotational atherectomy and mitral balloon valvuloplasty. He has extensive experience in managing cardiac problems in athletes, having helped establish a sports cardiology service at the Olympic Medical Institute. Over 10 years, this team saw more than 1,000 athletes referred with cardiac issues. Dr. Stephens is particularly interested in assessing apparently abnormal findings in athletes' hearts and determining whether it is safe for them to continue playing competitive sports if they have established heart disease. This has become an increasingly complex issue as common cardiovascular diseases tend to occur later in life while many people still wish to take part and compete in sporting activities.

Dr Nigel G Stephens is a professional, friendly, and reassuring presence for his patients. He explains medical issues and next steps clearly, including specific procedures such as echocardiograms and stress ECGs. Patients highlight his extensive expertise, especially his understanding of heart conditions in active individuals and the provision of long-term care. Many patients seek his expertise for echocardiograms and managing conditions like atrial fibrillation.
I saw Dr Stephens for my annual review. He was as professional and friendly as ever.
Professional and spoke using language easy to comprehend.
Dr Stephens was superb. He explained everything clearly and with empathy
My daughter is under Dr Nigel Stephen’s following a diagnosis of EILO and concerns over high HR. As an endurance cyclist we needed reassurance that she wasn’t placing herself in harms way following an increase in symptoms during max efforts. Dr Stephen’s has been working with the EILO consultant Dr James Hull to ensure a jointed up approach to her treatment. Dr Stephen’s has taken a pragmatic approach of ruling out obvious causes with blood work along with cautious approach of screening via echocardiogram and HR monitoring. I have personally felt very assured by Nigel and would highly recommend him.
good advice but very expensive. Another £250 for a 15 min meeting to explain the findings.
Dr. Stephens was extremely personable, friendly yet truly professional. He managed my condition successfully leaving me confident in my wellbeing.
Dr Stephens deep knowledge and experience are what comes over in consultation…he is very clear on his opinion…he left me confident and reassured as to the best path forward for the best outcome……I am glad I was able to see him
As always a state of the art consultation from one of the UK's leading cardiologists. I could not recommend him more highly.
Dr Stephens has been my consultant since 2018. Since that time my heart’s function has improved considerably because of his prescription of the correct medications, procedures and lifestyle advice. I trust his judgment implicitly and feel confident going forward.
Dr Stephens is an extremely experienced and excellent cardiologist and skilful interventional cardiologist. Knowledgeable, excellent communication skills, providing calm consultation opinions.
