About Dr Nigel G Stephens

Nigel Stephens was recruited from Cambridge University, where he was a Lecturer in Medicine, to lead a newly built Cardiac Centre in Northwick Park Hospital over 20 years ago. This centre became successful and high-performing, with excellent outcomes. He brings these same qualities to his private practice, providing accessible and personalised care for people with heart disease. He is particularly committed to helping patients return to an active life following episodes of serious illness, so they can enjoy the benefits of physical activity and exercise.

Dr. Stephens oversees all aspects of cardiology care for patients 16 and older, including valvular heart disease, hypertension, cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and cardiac rhythm abnormalities. He also offers interventional procedures such as coronary angioplasty and stenting. He has strong and reliable communications with a group of colleagues who are based at Northwick Park Hospital; referrals to specialist cardiac surgery or electrophysiology services are discussed weekly in a meeting that Dr. Stephens chairs himself.

Dr. Stephens provides comprehensive care for patients with complex cardiovascular conditions, including the use of rotational atherectomy and mitral balloon valvuloplasty. He has extensive experience in managing cardiac problems in athletes, having helped establish a sports cardiology service at the Olympic Medical Institute. Over 10 years, this team saw more than 1,000 athletes referred with cardiac issues. Dr. Stephens is particularly interested in assessing apparently abnormal findings in athletes' hearts and determining whether it is safe for them to continue playing competitive sports if they have established heart disease. This has become an increasingly complex issue as common cardiovascular diseases tend to occur later in life while many people still wish to take part and compete in sporting activities.

Dr Stephens was very polite and took time to fully understand what the issue was. After assessment Dr Stephens provided a full detailed breakdown on what his thinking was and provided the least intrusive tests to start building up a picture. All questions were answered and time taken to explain and reassure me. At the follow up appointment, Dr Stephens provided a breakdown of the results and assurances and a detailed plan on what is needed next. It was a pleasure to have been treated by Dr Stephens.

Dr. Stephens quickly addressed my heart problem and provided clear and concise answers to the three questions I hoped would be answered :- 1. What is wrong 2. Can it be cured or controlled 3. Can I continue cycling and exercising as I have been before I’m so pleased I came to see Dr Stephens as he understands how important cycling is to me and that even at my age (72) I do not want to stop intense exercise and even competing, and he is helping me achieve this.

After being prescribed medication for high Blood Pressure and cholesterol my athletic form dropped 'off a cliff' and I was experiencing extreme fatigue and muscle pain. Additionally I had previously had a traumatic ski accident which fracture almost half my ribs and my sternum. I was concerned there was an issue with my heart and needed an expert to test and explore. I saw Nigel, who immediately reassured me he would find out if there was an issue. His first action was to recommend a change in meds to those more suited to a masters endurance athlete (which has had an amazing effect) and he wrote to my GP to imediately effect this change. Nigel arranged a 12 point resting plus stress exercise ECG and stress Echocardiogram whilst also monitoring my BP (during the whole process). After the above I had a 1:1 review with Nigel where I totally reassured my heart was in excellent condition and to continue with the meds. Throughout the whole process Nigel's confident, impressive and immense knowledge (he is one of the leading experts in this field) together with softly spoken approach was supremely informative and wonderfully comforting. Not only a brilliant professional heart specialist, also a very kindly man. The whole process was wonderfully managed by his team and for me, probably the best outcome I could have wished.
