Nigel Stephens was recruited from Cambridge University, where he was a Lecturer in Medicine, to lead a newly built Cardiac Centre in Northwick Park Hospital over 20 years ago. This centre became successful and high-performing, with excellent outcomes. He brings these same qualities to his private practice, providing accessible and personalised care for people with heart disease. He is particularly committed to helping patients return to an active life following episodes of serious illness, so they can enjoy the benefits of physical activity and exercise.
Dr. Stephens oversees all aspects of cardiology care for patients 16 and older, including valvular heart disease, hypertension, cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and cardiac rhythm abnormalities. He also offers interventional procedures such as coronary angioplasty and stenting. He has strong and reliable communications with a group of colleagues who are based at Northwick Park Hospital; referrals to specialist cardiac surgery or electrophysiology services are discussed weekly in a meeting that Dr. Stephens chairs himself.
Dr. Stephens provides comprehensive care for patients with complex cardiovascular conditions, including the use of rotational atherectomy and mitral balloon valvuloplasty. He has extensive experience in managing cardiac problems in athletes, having helped establish a sports cardiology service at the Olympic Medical Institute. Over 10 years, this team saw more than 1,000 athletes referred with cardiac issues. Dr. Stephens is particularly interested in assessing apparently abnormal findings in athletes' hearts and determining whether it is safe for them to continue playing competitive sports if they have established heart disease. This has become an increasingly complex issue as common cardiovascular diseases tend to occur later in life while many people still wish to take part and compete in sporting activities.

Dr Nigel G Stephens offers professional, clear, reassuring, and friendly patient interactions. His expertise covers procedures such as angioplasty and PFO closure, with a notable understanding of sports cardiology and active lifestyles, ensuring patients understand their diagnoses and treatment plans. Some patients mention issues with follow-up communication regarding test results or subsequent appointments. Patient feedback consistently highlights Dr Stephens' thoroughness in addressing concerns, with many positive outcomes relating to echocardiogram results and management of atrial fibrillation.
I cannot thank Dr Stephens enough for seeing me so promptly when I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. From the moment I met him, his expertise, calm manner, and clear explanations were incredibly reassuring during what was a very worrying time. He took the time to explain everything in a way that was easy to understand and made me feel completely confident in the care I was receiving. His professionalism and bedside manner are truly exceptional. I feel both grateful and fortunate to have had such a highly regarded cardiologist looking after me, and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone needing expert cardiac care.
As usual, as a long time patient of Dr Stephens, I have been entirely satisfied with every aspect of his careful explanation and recommendations regarding of my current heart health.
I have been attending Dr Stephen's private practice since 2002 when I have require heart health consultations. As always, he puts me completely at ease and with a few questions is able to determine the next course of treatment. I find that Dr Stephens is always able to explain complex medical issues in simple layman's terms to me.
I was looked after and treated very best. After procedure instructions were very clear and follow up appointment with Dr were perfect
Being able to share symptoms with a medic who understood athletic ability and aspiration and the difference between the athlete and the sedentary, or averagely fit, man in the street was like opening a portal into a whole new world of mutual understanding. It was like walking into the light. It helps that this conversation was conducted in erudite, and articulate, English: A palpable sense of humour and humanity. Nothing was lost in translation. Dr Stephens patient listening and immediate identification of the salient points and recognition of the issues was deeply reassuring. The plan going forward was sensible to me and equally reassuring. That plan involves a privately funded echo cardiogram under exercise - review of the result and onward referral. This plan is an explicit and entire fulfilment of everything that I wanted from the consultation In fairness to the process, my full endorsement of the service provided rests heavily on whether what Dr Stephens said will happen next -actually happens next and the speed at which it does so.
Excellent bedside manner. All medical terms clearly explained. Felt at ease.
Dr.Stevens explained the problems I have very clearly and in language I could understand. He has treated me previously and feel I have a good relationship with him.
I have worked with Dr Nigel Stephens for many years and consider him an excellent colleague and clinician. He is a highly skilled interventionist with outstanding clinical judgement and technical expertise.
