Dr Michael Burdon is an experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist at The Priory Hospital. He completed his medical degree at St Thomas’ Hospital in 1985. He later completed specialised training in ophthalmology across renowned institutions in Oxford, Birmingham, Brisbane, and London (Moorfields Eye Hospital). He was appointed as a Consultant in Birmingham in 1997.
Dr Burdon provides a comprehensive range of treatments, operations, and tests to address diverse ocular conditions. His services include cataract removal and lens implantation (IOL), cataract surgery, cornea transplant, eye removal, false eye removal and exchange, glaucoma surgery, Intravenous Fluorescein Angiography (IVFA), Intravitreal Injection for AMD with Avastin and Lucentis, laser correction of poor sight through procedures like LASEK, LASIK, and Wavefront, as well as Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) for detailed imaging
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Burdon has principal research interests in papilledema and idiopathic intracranial hypertension. He has played a pivotal role in establishing an internationally recognised centre for neuro-ophthalmology.
Dr Burdon chaired the recently published National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guideline on cataract surgery in adults. Additionally, he has served as the past chair of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists scientific committee, contributing significantly to the advancement of ophthalmological knowledge and practices. He was appointed as the President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in May 2017.
