About Professor Mark William Little

Professor Mark William Little is a Consultant Diagnostic and Interventional Radiologist and the Academic Lead for the University Department of Radiology at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. He graduated with distinction from Norwich Medical School and underwent further medical and surgical training at Cambridge. Professor Little was awarded the prestigious National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Academic Clinical Fellowship in Clinical Radiology at Oxford, where he specialises in interventional radiology through a fellowship, achieving certification in both clinical and interventional radiology. He also sub-specialises in uroradiology and cancer imaging, with advanced training in multiparametric MRI of the prostate.

Professor Little is recognised internationally for his pioneering work in interventional radiology, particularly in prostate artery embolisation (PAE) for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). He introduced this innovative procedure to the UK after training under Professor Pisco in Lisbon. Through grant funding from the Royal College of Radiologists, he launched the first UK research study investigating PAE’s effectiveness. He is now one of the most experienced practitioners globally in this technique and serves as an advisor to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in England.

In 2018, Professor Little initiated the first European research study on Genicular Artery Embolisation (GAE) for knee osteoarthritis, known as The GENESIS study, pioneering musculoskeletal embolotherapy worldwide. He has since performed numerous GAE procedures, regularly lecturing and mentoring fellow consultants on this technique. His groundbreaking research has earned him numerous accolades, including the NIHR Rising Research Star Award in 2018 and the CVIR Editor's Medal in 2022.

In addition to his clinical work, Professor Little is highly involved in teaching and research. He has led numerous studies, holds several research grants, and has authored widely in his field. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a visiting professor at the University of Reading, and a former lecturer in anatomy and embryology at the University of Oxford. In 2023, he was made a Fellow of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) and serves as Chair of the Research Committee for the British Society of Interventional Radiology.

Doctor Little was able to answer my many questions easily. He explained the risks clearly. He spoke about his 10 years of experience in carrying out PAE and how few problems he had and that they all resolved. I am waiting for a CT scan to evaluate my suitability.

Clear, professional and positive. After negative diagnosis from a previous urologist, it was with relief that we felt there was some hope for the future.

Following my PAE by Prof Little in August 2024 I had a recent review consultation to discuss progress. I remain very pleased with the outcome and the high standard of follow-up care. Prof Little is an exceptional consultant radiologist, and extremely knowledgeable, calm and reassuring. I’m very grateful for the excellent care provided by him, and feel fortunate to have been in such capable hands.

My father underwent a prostate arterial embolisation (PAE) under the care of Professor Mark Little. Naturally, we were apprehensive at first, but the entire process was handled with professionalism, clarity, and reassurance. Professor Little explained the procedure and the expected outcomes very clearly, and his advice throughout was measured and confident. The results have been excellent and exactly as described. Since the procedure, my father has experienced a significant reduction in nightly trips to the toilet, and his ability to empty his bladder has improved markedly. This has made a noticeable difference to his day-to-day comfort and overall quality of life. Overall, we are extremely pleased with the outcome and grateful for Professor Little’s expertise and care. Highly recommended.

I was under the care of Prof. Little recently (early Jan 26) for a Prostate Artery Embolisation procedure and have only very positive feedback. His level of knowledge, experience and professionalism are of the highest calibre and he is also prepared to explain details clearly and concisely giving the patient the level of comfort we all hope to have when undergoing any medical procedure. He is friendly, approachable and demonstrates a level of care and consideration that I believe we all are very grateful for in such circumstances. I couldn’t recommend him highly enough.
