Diabetes & Endocrinology Specialist
Norwich, NR4 7TD
I am a full-time clinician and my predominant areas of interest are inpatient diabetes – in particular peri-operative diabetes care, the management of diabetes-related emergencies, and the ‘diabetic foot'. I have been a consultant in diabetes, endocrinology and general medicine at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital since 2004. In 2017 I was awarded a PhD in Inpatient Diabetes by the University of East Anglia (UEA), and also became an Honorary Professor of Medicine at the UEA in 2019. My focus has always been on improving the care of patients with diabetes.
In 2021 I was named the number one world leader in the life-threatening diabetic complication called Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) by Expertscape, an organisation that lists and ranks physicians from around the world. I want to make Norwich shine and it's nice that the work we've done here in Norwich has been recognised. I'm fortunate that I have colleagues who allow me to work on the things I enjoy.
I have several national roles in the UK; I Chair the Joint British Diabetes Societies Inpatient Care Group, where I have led or co-authored several national guidelines on the management of various aspects of inpatient diabetes care, including the guideline on peri-operative diabetes care. I am the Chair of the Examining Board for the UK Specialist Clinical Exam in Diabetes and Endocrinology. I am the immediate past President of the Diabetes and Endocrine section of the Royal Society of Medicine. I also lead one of the largest foot clinics in the East of England.
I qualified from the University of London in 1991 and did my diabetes and endocrinology training in and around London. For two years during this training I was also a part-time General Practitioner. I took some time out of my training to spend a year doing intensive care medicine and anaesthetics. After finishing my diabetes training in 2001, I went to do research in endocrinology at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, USA.
I am Associate Editor of Diabetic Medicine and BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care. I also have over 170 peer reviewed publications, over 120 abstracts, and have published several book chapters on inpatient diabetes, peri-operative diabetes care or on the diabetic foot.
