About Professor Gus Gazzard

Professor Gus Gazzard is an experienced Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields Private Eye Hospital with expertise in cataract surgery and glaucoma. He completed his medical degree at the University of Cambridge in 1993, followed by his specialised ophthalmology training at St Thomas’ Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He then became a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and registered in the General Medical Council's Specialist Register in 2005. Professor Gazzard later completed two years of research leading to an MD Thesis on the surgical management of glaucoma.

Alongside his roles as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Director of the Glaucoma Service at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Professor Gazzard is also UCL Professor of Ophthalmology. 

Professor Gazzard's research interests and experiences revolve around the diagnosis and surgical management of glaucoma and cataracts. He has a particular focus on randomised controlled trials of laser and surgical treatment alternatives, including laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) techniques such as CyPass, iStent, Hydrus, Trabectome, ABiC, and Xen implants. His expertise also includes trabeculectomy procedures, tube shunt surgery, modern angle closure therapies.

Professor Gazzard holds professional memberships with the European Glaucoma Society, UK & Eire Glaucoma Society, UK Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons, European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
