Dr Derek McWhirter

Dr Derek McWhirter is a Consultant General Surgeon and Colorectal Surgeon who provides comprehensive, patient-centred surgical care. His clinical focus encompasses both elective and emergency general surgery, with subspecialist expertise in inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal failure, and bowel cancer. Dr McWhirter routinely utilises advanced laparoscopic techniques and minimally invasive procedures designed to optimise clinical outcomes and support smoother patient recoveries. Dr McWhirter completed his undergraduate medical studies at the University of Glasgow Medical School, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 2005, having previously earned a Bachelor of Science in 2003. He completed surgical training across Glasgow and Liverpool, earning a research Doctor of Medicine degree in 2014. He further refined his clinical skills through fellowship training in trauma surgery in South Africa as well as a specialist fellowship in Cambridge. He achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2016 and is a member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.
