About Dr. Derek Chan
Dr Derek Chan is a highly experienced consultant gastroenterologist with over 20 years of experience in medicine and gastroenterology. His particular clinical interests including functional bowel disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He also sees a wide variety of patients with reflux, change in bowel habits and abdominal pain / bloating among a range of other complaints. He sees private patients at Spire St. Anthony's Hospital and Ramsay Ashtead Hospital.
Dr. Chan completed his undergraduate studies at St Bartholomew's and The Royal London Hospital Medical School in 2003. He then went on to complete his postgraduate training within the South West Thames area, including research work at St George's Hospital, London. His research area at this time was regarding the role of diet and gut bacteria on inflammatory bowel disease. Since this time, Dr. Chan has continued to maintain a research interest to ensure he keeps abreast of the latest advances in his field.
In addition to his busy clinical work, Dr. Chan is also involved in teaching, particularly of junior staff as well as holding the position of gastroenterology training lead at St Helier Hospital, his NHS base. He aims to provide a holistic approach to his care, treating his patients as a whole rather than just treating a condition. His opinion for complex cases has spanned the UK and abroad.
