Mr David Crone

Mr David Crone is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospitals Sussex, where he has worked within the Major Trauma Centre since 2012. He specialises in the management of complex orthopaedic trauma and knee conditions, combining extensive surgical experience with a thoughtful, patient-centred approach to care. He recognises the impact that serious injuries and musculoskeletal conditions can have on everyday life and is committed to helping patients understand their condition, make informed decisions about their treatment, and achieve the best possible functional outcomes. 

Mr Crone graduated from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1999, obtaining his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). He completed the majority of his specialist training at The Royal London Hospital as part of the North East Thames rotation, gaining extensive experience in the management of major trauma. He subsequently undertook specialist fellowship training in trauma and elective knee surgery in Christchurch, New Zealand, where he further developed his expertise in the treatment of severe and complex injuries, including mass casualty trauma following the Christchurch earthquake in 2011. He holds Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCS Tr & Orth). 

His clinical practice focuses on major trauma, complex fracture reconstruction, and the management of severe limb injuries. He has particular expertise in complex tibial plateau fractures, non-union and malunion of fractures, bone infection, and bone loss.  

Drawing on extensive experience in high-volume trauma practice, he uses contemporary surgical techniques, including damage-control strategies and complex reconstructive procedures, tailored to each patient's individual circumstances and clinical needs. 

Mr Crone was instrumental in establishing the Sussex Orthoplastic and Bone Infection Service in collaboration with consultant colleagues. Working closely with Plastic Surgery and Microbiology teams, he helps deliver coordinated, multidisciplinary care for patients with complex injuries and bone infection. Having served for many years as Clinical Lead for Orthopaedic Trauma, he continues to contribute to the coordination and development of the Sussex Trauma Network. 

Alongside his trauma practice, Mr Crone has a specialist interest in elective knee surgery. He regularly operates at the Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre, treating a broad range of knee conditions through procedures including total knee replacement, arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, and soft-tissue surgery, including ligament repair and reconstruction.  

Committed to education, training, and continuous professional development, Mr Crone has extensive experience teaching and directing courses at local, national, and international levels. He has served for many years as Regional Course Director for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), contributing to the development of trauma knowledge and clinical skills among healthcare professionals. He is also actively involved in clinical audit and research and serves as a reviewer for the Bone & Joint Journal. 

Mr Crone believes that excellent orthopaedic care involves more than the successful treatment of an injury or condition. It also requires careful listening, realistic advice, and support throughout the patient's treatment and recovery. His aim is to combine sound clinical judgement and surgical expertise with an approachable, considerate manner, helping patients regain mobility, independence, and confidence in their everyday lives.
