Dr Avril Washington

Dr Avril Washington is a dedicated Consultant Paediatrician specialising in general paediatrics, paediatric mental health, and complex paediatric care. With a focus on providing compassionate and patient-centred medical support, Dr Washington works closely with young patients and their families to address a wide spectrum of childhood health conditions. Her approach integrates clinical excellence with a clear understanding of the emotional and psychological needs of growing children, ensuring that every child receives holistic and reassuring care.

Her extensive clinical interests encompass paediatric mental health, behavioural paediatrics, and neurodevelopmental and social paediatrics. Dr Washington has established dedicated services for paediatric behavioural assessment and possesses significant expertise in supporting looked-after children and young people managing complex medical conditions, including post-COVID-19 condition (long COVID). She is particularly skilled in therapeutic communication, ensuring that children across all developmental stages feel heard, comfortable, and actively engaged during consultations.

Dr Washington earned her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree and subsequently attained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP). In 1997, she completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Therapeutic Communication with Children at the Tavistock Clinic in London. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (FRCPCH) and actively contributes to professional education, research, and national guidance initiatives in child health.
