Miss Amy Thomas is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon with specialist expertise in robotic colorectal surgery, bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), proctology and minimally invasive surgery. She is committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based care tailored to each individual patient, ensuring they feel informed, supported and confident throughout their treatment. Miss Thomas practices within the Mersey West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (Whiston and St Helens Hospitals) and also sees private patients at Alexandra Hospital.
She graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2004 before completing higher surgical training in the Mersey Deanery and gaining the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS). Following completion of her UK training, she undertook two prestigious international colorectal fellowships in Australia, further developing advanced expertise in robotic surgery and complex colorectal disease.
Her first fellowship was at Concord Repatriation Hospital in Sydney, a renowned tertiary colorectal unit specialising in bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and complex benign colorectal conditions. She subsequently completed a highly competitive Advanced Robotic Colorectal Fellowship at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Epworth Freemasons Hospital in Melbourne, one of Australia's leading robotic colorectal programmes. During this fellowship she gained extensive experience in robotic bowel cancer surgery, advanced pelvic surgery and minimally invasive techniques, skills she now brings to both her NHS and private practice.
Miss Thomas is currently a Consultant at Whiston Hospital, where her NHS practice has a strong focus on colorectal cancer, robotic surgery and inflammatory bowel disease. She also has extensive expertise in treating common colorectal conditions including haemorrhoids, anal fissures, fistula-in-ano, pilonidal disease and diverticular disease.
She has a particular interest in proctology and understands that symptoms such as rectal bleeding, pain and bowel dysfunction can have a significant impact on confidence and quality of life. She appreciates that many bowel symptoms are multifactorial and therefore adopts a holistic approach, considering dietary factors, pelvic floor function, lifestyle and overall bowel health alongside any surgical condition. Her aim is always to identify the underlying cause of symptoms and recommend the least invasive treatment appropriate for each patient.
In addition to her clinical practice, Miss Thomas is actively involved in surgical leadership, education and service development. She is currently undertaking the competitively awarded Royal College of Surgeons of England Emerging Leaders Programme, recognising future leaders within UK surgery. She also serves as Infection Control Lead for General Surgery and Advice & Guidance Lead within her NHS Trust, supporting primary care colleagues with timely specialist advice to improve patient care.
Teaching and mentorship are important aspects of her career. She regularly teaches surgical trainees and robotic fellows and is passionate about supporting the development of future surgeons. She was recently an invited speaker for the Association of Coloproctologists on the Advanced Coloproctology course sharing her expertise on the national and international stage.
Patients frequently describe Miss Thomas as approachable, compassionate and
easy to talk to. She believes that excellent surgical care is built not only on
technical expertise but also on listening carefully, explaining options clearly
and making shared decisions. Whether treating bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel
disease, hernias or benign anorectal conditions, her priority is to deliver
personalised care with kindness, honesty and clinical excellence.
