Dr Anton Van Heerden

Dr Anton Van Heerden is a highly accomplished Consultant Ophthalmologist and Eye Surgeon who provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art vision care. With a clinical focus on cataract and refractive surgery, he is dedicated to helping patients achieve optimal visual outcomes through tailored treatment plans. Dr Van Heerden is recognised for his meticulous surgical approach, clear communication, and reassuring patient care, ensuring that individuals feel fully informed and comfortable throughout their vision correction journey. His expertise spans advanced laser vision correction techniques, lens replacement procedures, and the management of complex retinal and inflammatory eye conditions.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr Van Heerden has held significant leadership roles, including serving as the Head of Unit for Surgical Ophthalmology Services at a major specialist eye hospital in Melbourne. In this capacity, he has been instrumental in guiding clinical standards and mentoring the next generation of eye specialists. His early clinical experiences in regional settings instilled a deep commitment to addressing vision loss and restoring quality of life for his patients. Today, he continues to lead clinical teams as a Director and Principal Surgeon, utilising cutting-edge diagnostic and surgical technologies to deliver precise, safe, and reliable care.

Dr Van Heerden completed his primary medical degree (MBChB) at Stellenbosch University in 1998. He subsequently pursued extensive postgraduate training internationally, becoming a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London in 2003. He completed his specialist ophthalmology training at a major teaching hospital in Cape Town, obtaining his Fellowship of the College of Ophthalmologists of South Africa (FCOphth) in 2008. Upon relocating to Australia, he completed advanced fellowship training in medical retina and inflammatory eye disease at a leading specialist eye hospital in Victoria. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO) in 2009 and later achieved a Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery from the University of Sydney in 2013. Dr Van Heerden is an active member of several prestigious professional bodies, including the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists (ASO), the Australian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (AUSCRS), and the World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences (WCRS).
