He completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at the University of Melbourne in 1993, followed by a PhD in genetics at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO) in 2005. To further advance his subspecialist training, he undertook additional training at the renowned Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States.

A/Prof Symons has held several senior leadership roles, including Head of Ophthalmology at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and Head of Retina at the Kansas University Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology.
