Mr Stephen Broomfield

I have been a consultant Ear, Nose and Throat surgery in Bristol since 2011. I treat both adults and children, with a specialist interest in otology (conditions of the ear), including ear surgery and the treatment of balance disorders. I work closely with my colleagues in audiology to provide a complete service.

My specific areas of interest include hearing loss and hearing restoration surgery (including grommet insertion, stapedectomy, ossiculoplasty), ear canal blockage/ infections, tinnitus, vertigo/ dizziness, middle ear and mastoid surgery (including eardrum repair and revision surgery), endoscopic ear surgery, intra-tympanic inner ear therapies, hearing implants, adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy in children.

After graduating from the University of Manchester, I completed general and ENT surgical training in the North West. I undertook advanced specialist training in Sydney, working with pioneers in cochlear implantation and the treatment of Meniere's disease. This was followed by further specialist surgical training at Nottingham University Hospitals, gaining additional skills in all areas of otology. Since being appointed as a consultant in Bristol, I have been awarded grants to travel to European centres of excellence for middle ear surgery and endoscopic ear surgery.

I am active in research and have published multiple scientific journal papers and book chapters in my areas of specialism. I am deputy editor for the journal Cochlear Implants International. I am regularly invited to give presentations and take part in expert panel discussions at scientific conferences.

I enjoy teaching and am the lead clinician for teaching ENT to medical students in Bristol. I am an undergraduate tutor and an Honorary Teaching Associate at the University of Bristol.

I am interested in Global ENT Outreach and am a Trustee for the charity EarAid Nepal.
