Mr Sidath Liyanage

Mr Sidath Liyanage is a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina conditions, and advanced cataract and refractive surgery. He manages a broad range of complex eye conditions, delivering high-quality care for patients with retinal disorders such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal detachment, macular holes, and epiretinal membranes. Additionally, he performs complex and high-risk cataract operations, utilising advanced intraocular lens options to help improve visual outcomes.

Mr Liyanage studied medicine at University College London, graduating with distinctions and qualifying in 2003, having previously completed a Bachelor of Science with honours. During his medical training, he won the undergraduate Duke Elder Prize Examination awarded by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He subsequently completed specialist ophthalmic training alongside advanced fellowship training in medical retina and vitreoretinal surgery. His postgraduate qualifications include Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (awarded in 2010), a PhD from University College London (awarded in 2017), and a Certificate in Laser Refractive Surgery (awarded in 2018). Upon completing his specialist training, he was awarded the prestigious Harcourt Medal for achieving first place in the final consultant examinations. He holds professional memberships with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the British and Eire Association of Vitreoretinal Surgeons, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the Refractive Surgical Alliance.

In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Liyanage is actively involved in surgical education and clinical research as an Honorary Senior Lecturer. He has secured competitive research grant funding to investigate innovative treatments for age-related macular degeneration and participates in clinical trials evaluating emerging retinal therapies. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed medical journals and contributed to ophthalmic textbooks, contributing to advancements in patient care within the field of Ophthalmology.
