Dr Shankari Arulkumaran

Dr Shankari Arulkumaran is a highly accomplished Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist who provides comprehensive care in women's health. With a clinical focus that spans both obstetrics and outpatient gynaecology, she is dedicated to supporting women through all stages of their reproductive journeys. Dr Arulkumaran has a particular interest in maternal well-being, serving as the Antenatal Services, Perinatal Mental Health, and Bereavement Lead. Her reassuring and patient-centred approach ensures that individuals receive compassionate, tailored support, particularly when navigating complex pregnancies or recovering from traumatic births.

Dr Arulkumaran completed her medical training at Imperial College London, qualifying in 2003. Prior to this, she earned an Intercalated BSc in Medical Anthropology from University College London in 2001, receiving a First Class degree and a prestigious prize for her dissertation on reproductive rights. Committed to advancing clinical safety and research, she later obtained an MD for her research into preterm labour, as well as an MSc in Safety and Healthcare, both from Imperial College London. Her postgraduate training was completed within teaching hospitals across North West London.

In addition to her clinical practice, Dr Arulkumaran is a prominent leader in maternal safety and education. She serves as the Joint Chair of the Perinatal Mortality Review, a national audit dedicated to reviewing stillbirths and neonatal deaths, and is an active member of her local Maternity Clinical Risk Management team. Recognising the vital link between physical and mental health, she collaborates closely with the Royal College of Psychiatrists on teaching and educational initiatives. She also conducts joint clinics with experienced Psychiatrists to offer specialised support for women experiencing perinatal mental health challenges or previous obstetric losses.
