Dr. Samford Wong

Dr. Wong qualified in Nutrition and Dietetics from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, in 2004. He went on to complete a PhD at City, University of London, where his research focused on nutritional management following spinal cord injury.

Throughout his career, Dr. Wong has combined clinical practice with academic research. He has held several specialist roles, including Research Dietitian and Lead Dietitian in Spinal Injuries at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.

Dr. Wong provides personalised nutritional assessment and dietary support for individuals with spinal cord injuries, tailoring treatment to each patient's stage of recovery. Whether supporting patients following acute trauma or during long-term rehabilitation, he helps optimise nutrition to promote recovery, health, and wellbeing.

His principal clinical interest is nutritional management after spinal cord injury, where evidence-based dietary care plays a vital role in improving recovery, reducing complications, and enhancing long-term outcomes. He is highly regarded by both colleagues and patients for his expertise, compassionate approach, and commitment to delivering personalised care.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr. Wong is actively involved in research, teaching, and the advancement of dietetic practice. He is an Honorary Reader (Associate Professor) at City St George's, University of London, and an Honorary Fellow at the University's Centre for Health Services Research.

Dr. Wong chairs the Nutrition Specialist Interest Group for the International Spinal Cord Society and previously chaired a key committee within the UK's Multidisciplinary Association for Spinal Cord Injury Professionals.

He led the validation and implementation of the Spinal Nutrition Screening Tool (SNST), a disease-specific nutritional screening tool that has helped improve the identification and management of nutritional risk in spinal cord injury. He has also developed innovative services, including dietitian-led weight management programmes for this patient group.

His research has explored the role of probiotics in preventing bowel complications, as well as nutritional strategies to reduce the risk of pressure ulcers, osteoporosis, obesity, and other complications associated with spinal cord injury.

In addition to leading research projects, Dr. Wong has contributed to numerous book chapters, peer-reviewed publications, scientific journal reviews, and national and international clinical guidelines, including those produced by the British Dietetic Association and the Consortium for Spinal Cord Medicine in the United States.

Widely recognised as a leader in spinal cord injury nutrition, Dr. Wong remains committed to improving standards of care through clinical excellence, research, education, and the development of evidence-based practice.
