My psychotherapy work over 25 years has been with adults, families, young people
and children. I have worked in various setting including GP Practice,
University Counselling, NHS, Prison Service and in schools.
I understand that seeking counselling/therapy for the first time can often make
people anxious and nervous. This is a normal experience, and is why when you
contact me by phone, we discuss what has initially brought you to make the call
and to see if in our first appointment, we can both relate to one another and
more importantly to see if you can feel comfortable in working with me to gain
insight and understanding over your life to move forward. The way I practice
depends on you and your needs. I follow a broad-based approach which will look
at how you feel, how you think and how you behave in the world.
Depending on these factors you may wish to focus on short-term problem solving, how to cope with the difficulties that life can throw at us. On the other hand you may
wish to look deeper into how you came to be as you are - your past can tell us
a lot about your present. The focus of my work is to help you change in
whatever way you wish to do so. Conversations in your counselling sessions will
then be the two of us looking carefully and closely at how you manage your
relationships, your health, your work, any life issue which causes you distress
or concern.
I initially trained as an integrative psychotherapist in, drawing upon different
stands of therapy such as humanistic, cognitive behavioural and psychodynamic,
gestalt and transactional analysis. I then later specialised in forensic
psychodynamic psychotherapy, solution focussed work and trauma offering EMDR.
