About Dr. Ricky Shamji

Dr Shamji is a highly experienced consultant in sports and exercise medicine, based at the Centre for Musculoskeletal Medicine at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. He specialises in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of joint, muscle, and tendon injuries, helping individuals of all activity levels return to optimal physical performance.

With extensive experience and leadership in elite sport, Dr Shamji holds senior positions in high-performance teams, ensuring the safe return of professional athletes to competition following complex injuries. He has worked alongside top specialists and rehabilitation teams both nationally and internationally, applying evidence-based approaches to injury management and pain relief.

A fellow of the UK Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, Dr Shamji served as Head of Medical Services at Aston Villa Football Club for several years and currently works at the England FA and Coventry City FC. He has also been Chief Medical Officer at Walsall FC and a medical officer for the English Institute of Sport, caring for Paralympic athletes. His expertise was recognised at the London 2012 Olympics, where he was a field of play team leader.

Beyond elite sport, Dr Shamji has contributed to public health initiatives, designing and leading the ‘Prescription for Exercise’ programme, which supported inactive patients with chronic disease through physical activity guidance in over 80 GP surgeries across Birmingham.
