About Professor Stephen Gwilym
I am a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising exclusively in shoulder conditions, based in Oxford.
My practice focuses on the assessment and treatment of common shoulder problems such as pain, stiffness, arthritis and instability, as well as more complex conditions when required.
I completed my orthopaedic training in the UK, with experience in London and Oxford, and undertook further specialist training in shoulder surgery across several centres in Europe and Australia. I am the lead clinician in the Oxford Shoulder Unit (NHS), and was previously the lead clinician at the Oxford Major Trauma Unit.
This broad training has shaped a balanced, evidence-based approach to both surgical and non-surgical shoulder care.
I have completed all relevant specialist examinations and remain fully accredited and GMC registered.
I am recognised by all major UK private medical insurers.
Alongside clinical practice, I am involved in world-leading research and ongoing professional education, ensuring that my work reflects current evidence and modern techniques.

Professor Gwilym reviewed the movement in my left shoulder following treatment for frozen shoulder (hydrodilation). I was seen on time. Professor Gwilym examined me and discussed with me my status and how to continue to make progress with the movement in my shoulder. He exudes calm professionalism, backed up by expert knowledge, combined with a friendly manner. I received his follow-up letter within 2 hours of seeing him.

I cannot recommend Professor Gwylim highly enough. From the very beginning, he was incredibly helpful, polite and professional, and he went above and beyond to help me throughout my treatment. At every stage, he took the time to provide clear and thorough explanations, making sure I fully understood what was happening and what my options were. His knowledge, care and attention gave me great confidence throughout what has been a difficult journey with my shoulder. What impressed me most was his genuine commitment to my ongoing care. He has even agreed to help me in the future should I need any further treatment for my shoulder, despite the fact that I will then be within the NHS system.
