Robert Ashford is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Musculoskeletal Tumour Surgeon at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and the East Midlands Sarcoma Service at Nottingham University Hospitals. He was appointed in 2007. He treats a wide variety of hip and knee conditions, bone and soft tissue tumours and metastatic malignancy. He has published extensively in these fields. He has been awarded an MD for his thesis entitled "Improving the patient journey in breast cancer metastatic to the skeleton" by the University of Sheffield.
In 2014 Professor Ashford was selected by the British Orthopaedic Association as an American-British-Canadian Traveling Fellow. The ABC Fellowship is a prestigious, highly competitive and sought-after honour awarded to leaders in the field of orthopaedic surgery. ABC Fellows are chosen every two years and travel to various academic institutions in the United States and Canada. They present their research and act as international ambassadors for the BOA as they learn about healthcare and research in their host countries. He was the first Leicester Surgeon to be named an ABC Fellow. He visited 12 centres on the East Coast of the United States and Canada.
In 2019 he was awarded an Honorary Professorship by the Leicester Cancer Research Centre, University of Leicester.
Professor Ashford is a keen teacher and is invited faculty on a number of courses. He also lectures regularly on his clinical and research interests. His family keeps him on the straight and narrow. For relaxation, he is an avid supporter of Leicester Tigers (feel his pain!)
Professor Ashford is a member of the following specialist societies: General Medical Council, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), British Orthopaedic Oncology Society (BOOS), British Association of Surgical Oncology (BASO), British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK), British Hip Society (BHS) and British Sarcoma Group (BSG).
He has served as President and Honorary Secretary of BOOS and been a member of the BOA education committee, NCRI Sarcoma Clinical Studies Group, BASO national committee and is the immediate Past President of BOOS.

Professor Ashford and his secretary Pat Rouse were excellent. Some of the administration at the Spire was a bit shaky to begin with as we were booked in and not aware of it. We also got called in for checks and repeated blood test which were cancelled while we were actually travelling to the hospital! Once this was all ironed out, the experience was excellent. Most importantly, the job was carried out with great efficiency care and good communication.
Very professional and understanding from start to finish. Prof Ashford made me feel at ease in a worrying situation. I would highly recommend him to others.
From the initial consultation through the operation and post op appointment Professor Ashford was excellent. He was very patient and explained everything in an easily understandable way. 10 out of 10. I couldn't have asked for better. Many thanks.
Professor Ashford was very informative thorough and friendly. A massive thank you for the outstanding care received!
From the very start after doing research and finding professer Robert Ashford to now being fully discharged the service from him has been brilliant and I can’t fault it. I can’t speak highly enough of his work and how well he’s looked after me.
