About Professor Brian Davidson

Professor Brian Davidson is a consultant in hepatopancreatobiliary and liver transplant surgery at the Royal Free Hospital, and Professor of Surgery and Head of Surgical Research at University College London. His private practice is with HCA Healthcare UK, primarily at The Wellington Hospital in St John’s Wood, with additional clinics at the Platinum Medical Centre in St John’s Wood and the Golders Green Outpatients and Diagnostics Centre. He specialises in liver, biliary tract and pancreatic surgery and the surgical management of cancer. He graduated in medicine from the University of Glasgow in 1985, was awarded FRCS in 1985 and completed an MD at the University of Glasgow in 1989, and has worked at UCL and the Royal Free for over twenty years.

His clinical practice includes liver resection for primary and secondary tumours, pancreatic surgery, biliary tract surgery and laparoscopic cholecystectomy, as well as the assessment and treatment of gallstones, pancreatitis, cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder cancer. He has played a key role in the development of the HPB and liver transplant unit at the Royal Free and maintains an active tertiary referral practice.

Alongside surgery, he leads a major research programme in HPB disease at UCL, has authored over 600 peer-reviewed papers and over twenty textbook chapters, and has supervised 40 PhD and MD degrees. He is active in clinical trials and evidence-based healthcare and has held national advisory and editorial roles, including advisor to NICE and national cancer programmes, senior editor of the Cochrane HPB group and NIHR lead for UK Surgery.

Professor Davidson removed my gallbladder. He was very clear and explained everything before the operation, and he also explained how everything went post operation. He was always very honest about the risks and potential side effects, and told me what to look out for in the healing process.
