Dr Paul Gissen

Dr Paul Gissen is an esteemed Consultant Paediatrician and Clinical Professor of Paediatric Metabolic Medicine, widely recognised for his expertise in evaluating and treating complex inherited metabolic conditions in children. With a compassionate and patient-centred clinical philosophy, he provides reassuring, family-focused care to young patients navigating rare and intricate diagnoses. Dr Gissen works collaboratively across multidisciplinary healthcare teams to deliver thorough diagnostic assessments and personalised management plans tailored to the physical, emotional, and developmental needs of every child.

Dr Gissen completed his primary medical qualification, earning his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Glasgow in 1995. He subsequently completed subspecialty higher paediatric training with a focus on inherited metabolic disorders. Demonstrating a profound commitment to translational medicine, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Human Molecular Genetics from the University of Birmingham in 2005. Dr Gissen is a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (FRCPCH) and holds specialist registration with the General Medical Council for Paediatrics.

In his clinical practice, Dr Gissen specialises in rare genetic metabolic diseases, intracellular trafficking disorders, and early-onset neurodegenerative conditions. His clinical interests include Batten disease (neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis), Niemann-Pick disease, and Arthrogryposis, Renal Dysfunction and Cholestasis (ARC) syndrome. As an active clinical investigator, he leads pioneering clinical trials and research programmes dedicated to novel gene and cellular therapies, including advanced enzyme replacement treatments.
