I'm a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds, and I see private patients at Spire Norwich Hospital. My work focuses on hip and knee replacement for people throughout East Anglia, and so far I have carried out more than 1,000 of these operations.
I aim to place each implant precisely and get the surrounding soft tissues properly balanced. That helps the new joint work well and feel as natural as possible afterwards. I hold certification in both MAKO and CORI robotic-assisted surgery, and I use these systems when they will benefit the patient.
Knee replacement: I follow a functional alignment approach, which works with each patient's own anatomy rather than against it. This gives better soft tissue balance and a knee that feels more like your own. Where it's appropriate, I routinely resurface the kneecap (patella) as well.
Hip replacement: For suitable patients I use a muscle-sparing mini posterior approach. I offer both uncemented and hybrid implants, depending on what suits the individual best.
Revision hip surgery: This is one of my particular specialist interests. In line with national best practice, the most complex revision cases are usually done within the NHS with the support of a multidisciplinary team.
Training and background: I qualified in medicine from the University of Nottingham in 2011, also gaining a BMedSci degree. I did my Higher Specialist Training in Trauma and Orthopaedics in the East of England Deanery. After that I completed high-volume joint replacement fellowships in New Zealand, Australia and the UK. These gave me broad experience in routine and complex hip and knee replacement, revision hip surgery and robotic-assisted techniques.
Away from operating, I'm keen on teaching and I'm an instructor on Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) courses in the region.
