About Dr Nicola Burch
Dr Nicola Burch is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Clinical Lead for Nutrition at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust, where she was appointed in 2011. She also served as Clinical Lead for Gastroenterology from December 2018 to October 2022.
Since her appointment, Dr Burch has played a central role in the transformation of gastroenterology, nutrition, and intestinal failure services at UHCW. Under her leadership, the Trust achieved Severe Intestinal Failure (SIF) Unit accreditation in 2022, becoming one of only two designated SIF centres in the West Midlands, serving a population of over 3 million people. She has also been instrumental in the development of endoscopy services, overseeing expansion from six to eight endoscopy rooms to meet growing clinical demand alongside wider departmental growth.
Dr Burch’s clinical expertise spans a broad range of gastrointestinal and nutritional conditions, with particular specialist interests in:
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
- Clinical nutrition and intestinal failure
- Functional bowel disorders
- Advanced endoscopy, including enteral feeding tube insertion
- Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) of large polyps
She is an accredited bowel cancer screening endoscopist, providing high-level diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic care.
Alongside her clinical work, Dr Burch is committed to medical education, contributing regularly to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in gastroenterology and clinical nutrition.
At a national level, she has been actively involved in shaping policy and best practice. She served as a member of the Royal College of Physicians Advisory Committee on Nutrition and Health from 2021 to 2024 and is a longstanding member of the British Association of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, where she previously held the role of Honorary Treasurer (2015–2019). Dr Burch has contributed to several important national publications, including RCP Feeding at Risk Guidance and RCP Supporting People Who Have Eating and Drinking Difficulties.
