His pioneering work has been featured on BBC News and BBC Breakfast.
He offers a wide range of treatments for upper GI conditions, including:
Expertise & Innovation in Robotics
Mr Penney established and leads the Upper GI Robotic Surgery service at NNUH, where he has pioneered several regional firsts. Most notably, he performed the region’s first robotic-assisted minimally invasive oesophagectomy — a highly complex cancer operation delivered at only a small number of centres in the UK.

Research & Teaching
Mr Penney holds a PhD from Imperial College London having investigated the gut microbiome's role in recovery following surgery. His work has been published in leading journals including Gut, Annals of Surgery, Nature Food and Scientific Reports. He remains active in clinical research on oesophagogastric cancer, robotic innovation and surgical outcomes.
He is also deeply committed to education and training:
Patient-Centred Approach
Mr Penney’s philosophy of care is personalised, evidence-based and focused on achieving the best possible outcomes for his patients, whether managing cancer, reflux, hernias or other benign upper GI conditions.

I recently had private surgery with Mr Penney and had a really positive experience. I can be quite anxious around medical procedures, appointments etc. but I felt listened to, supported, and treated with genuine care and respect. Mr Penney was friendly, professional and took the time to explain everything clearly and calmly, which helped put me at ease despite my anxiety. I felt reassured and never rushed, and any questions or concerns I had were addressed thoroughly. All of the hospital staff who supported me during my stay were absolutely lovely. Everyone was kind, patient, and reassuring, which made what I find very stressful feel much more manageable and positive. The standard of care before, during, and after the surgery was excellent. I felt very well looked after and supported throughout, and I'm extremely grateful for the care I received.
I have found Mr Penney to be both approachable but at the same time a very professional surgeon. I highly recommend this gentleman, and am very satisfied with the entire procedure.
Mr Penney had an excellent bedside manner throughout my treatment. He was approachable, took the time to listen, and answered all of my questions and concerns.
I had a very good experience, every one was professional, clear and friendly. The op went well and I was sent home the same day with some pain killers, which I only needed for 2 days. For the past 8 years, I had been suffering with indigestion, bloating and gas. But within 6 weeks of the operation I am completely free of discomfort. To be honest I had not made a connection between the re-occurrence of the hernia and the indigestion problems. I am delighted to say that at 70 I feel I have a new lease of life.
Mr Penney is everything you need and want in a consultant. Knowledgeable, experienced, professional, personable, kind and an excellent surgeon. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend after my exceptional experience in his hands.
I couldn’t have felt in better hands and was very pleased with how the appointment went, feeling relaxed although in discomfort.
Follow up visit after surgery 4 staff at consultation Each member explained my results & the next steps in my recovery All were very professional but human
My appointment was at 19:30 reception was very helpful and only had to wait 5 mins, all very good
I have recently been under the care of Mr Penney for the repair of a hiatus hernia. He took the time to explain all aspects of the treatment and expected recovery. He is very professional and easy to talk to. The operation went well and I was very happy with the end result.
He is an excellent doctor who listens to you well and explains things so you can understand , you never feel rushed on an appointment , and a brilliant surgeon , 1st class doctor the best .
Fantastic colleague and very competent surgeon.

General SurgeonNick Penny was one of my trainees, and was outstanding then, and is an excellent consultant surgeon. As a consultant, he has helped his team grow and been instrumental in the development of robotic oesophago-gastric surgery in East Anglia. He is a delightful man, with a great surgical talent, and good judgement.

The first robotic-assisted surgery to remove part of the oesophagus and stomach has taken place at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH). 54-year-old Lee Moreton, from King’s Lynn, underwent the 14-hour operation as part of his treatment plan for cancer. The NNUH has become one of only five sites across the UK to offer the highly specialist surgery, which can reduce the length of a hospital stay for patients. Mr Moreton was discharged just five days after his surgery, two days earlier than usual after an oesophagectomy, and with no complications. Quicker recovery An oesophagectomy is a two-stage procedure performed within both the abdomen and chest. Traditionally the procedure is performed either through open surgery, leaving much larger wounds and increased risk of infection, or minimally invasive laparoscopic and thoracoscopic techniques, which the NNUH have been at the forefront in developing. Both stages of the procedure, to remove a tumour from Mr Moreton’s oesophagus, were carried out robotically. The average length of time a patient undergoing an oesophagectomy stays in hospital ranges from seven to 13 days. The NNUH is currently above average with a typical stay lasting seven days and the hope is that a robotic approach will help improve recovery further still for patients. Robotic-assisted surgery requires only very small incisions, controlled remotely by a surgeon using miniaturised cameras and instruments, leading to reduced pain and blood loss and improved recovery times. “Absolutely fantastic” Mr Nicholas Penney, the Consultant Oesophagogastric Surgeon who performed the surgery on Mr Moreton, said: “The case was very challenging due to the tumour being densely adhered to the lining of the heart and airways following radiotherapy treatment. “Previously this would have necessitated the procedure being performed through an open thoracotomy incision. However, the improved 3D vision, dexterity and precision of the robot allowed the procedure to be performed minimally invasively through small incisions. “The hope is that this type of robotic surgery will continue to reduce complications such as pneumonia following surgery, reduce length of stay and aid in a quick return to full function for our future oesophagectomy patients.” Mr Moreton said: “I can’t believe the general lack of pain and the mobility I have after surgery, it’s absolutely fantastic. “I had open surgery years ago and that was much more difficult to deal with. I was told I’d be in at least a week so to go home after five days was great. It’s amazing what is available now.”
