Mr Adam Stearns is a highly experienced Consultant in General and Colorectal Surgery at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, where he has been practising since 2016. He specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the bowel, rectum and anus, and is known for his expertise in managing changes in bowel habit, rectal bleeding, haemorrhoids, anal fistulae, fissures, pilonidal disease, and rectal prolapse.
Alongside his work in benign disease, Mr Stearns has extensive experience in the management of colorectal cancer, neuroendocrine tumours and complex colorectal pathology. He is an advanced laparoscopic surgeon and performs minimally invasive procedures for the majority of patients requiring major colorectal surgery, helping to support faster recovery, less pain and shorter hospital stays.
He also has wide expertise in functional bowel disorders, including incontinence, soiling and obstructed defaecation, as well as diverticular disease and inflammatory bowel disease requiring surgical assessment. In addition, he frequently treats appendix-related conditions and collaborates closely with national specialist centres when needed. His practice also includes the full range of hernia surgery, including inguinal, umbilical, femoral and incisional hernias. As an accredited screening colonoscopist for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, he is highly skilled in the endoscopic detection and removal of benign polyps and in ruling out serious pathology.
Mr Stearns studied medicine at the University of Oxford, qualifying in 2002 before completing basic surgical training in Glasgow. He went on to undertake a three-year research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, leading to the award of a DPhil from Oxford. His higher surgical training was completed in the East of England, followed by prestigious fellowships in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery at St Mark’s Hospital in London and in peritoneal malignancy surgery at The Christie in Manchester.
At Norfolk & Norwich, he played a central role in establishing surgery for colorectal peritoneal metastases, making it the first centre in the East of England to offer cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC. He has also held several key leadership roles, including Service Director for General and Thoracic Surgery, Chair of the Colorectal Cancer MDT, and Lead for the Lower Gastrointestinal 2-Week-Wait pathway.
Mr Stearns remains active in national and international research, with particular interests in quality of life after colorectal surgery and the management of advanced colonic cancer. He regularly lectures at professional meetings and teaches on national and European courses in advanced colorectal techniques, contributing to the development of future surgeons and the continual improvement of patient care.

Excellent and caring understanding of my issues which have been fully explained.

Thank you very much for your feedback- I am really glad you found the appointment helpful
I recently had an ileostomy loop reversal carried out by Mr Stearns; he was also my surgeon last year for major surgery for bowel cancer. The level of care provided throughout has been excellent. Mr Stearns delivers medical findings sensitively and clearly, sharing as much or as little information as you want. He has extensive knowledge and talks through options and possible outcomes to help reach the right treatment decision for you. His holistic approach means you are seen as a person, not a diagnosis. Following my recent surgery the team were kind and supportive, and Mr Stearns was available to respond to questions and concerns, including once I was home. Overall I feel very lucky to have received this high level of care and would not hesitate in recommending to others.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this lovely feedback- it really is great to hear
Mr Stearns was extremely professional, and thorough. He listened to my concerns, and explained possible next steps to explain the source of my pain and discomfort. I felt reassured.

Thank you for leaving this comment- I am very pleased to hear that your consultation was of benefit.
Very sympathetic and very helpful and was put at ease

Many thanks for your kind words — I’m glad the consultation was helpful for you
From the outset Mr Stearns explained the procedure clearly, along with outlining the possible outcomes of surgery and likely recovery time and experience. This meant I had a good understanding of what to expect and was able to choose a suitable time period for the surgery to fit around other commitments. Mr Stearns has always been very responsive, being quick to answer queries and offering clear options at each stage.

Thank you for your very kind review.
My experience was excellent. I felt in safe hands with Adam right from the first time I met him. He articulates everything in a clear and concise manner and he was very conscientious during the whole process. He is clearly very dedicated to his job and a very knowledgeable, bright professional and I am relieved that I found Adam to carry out my operation.

Thank you for your kind feedback- it is very much appreciated by me and the whole team.
I was at the hospital for only a short time but the treatment I received and the attitude of everyone I met was very professional and cheerful.

Thank you for your kind review- I am glad to hear that you were pleased with the care you received.
Very experienced surgeon and fantastic colleague.
