To give some context, I had been experiencing right-sided hearing loss due to otosclerosis for approximately 2 years. The hearing loss was approx 40-50 decibels. It was most noticeable when lying in bed on my left ear, or listening to music through headphones. I also sometimes struggled to hear people speaking softly, or hearing quieter sounds on my right side. I also experienced persistent tinnitus in my right ear, which seems like it was associated with the hearing loss. I had a couple of consultations with Joe before deciding to proceed. Joe laid out all the options available to me - to do nothing, get a hearing aid or have the surgery. From my first meeting with Joe, he was extremely helpful, and explained everything in a way which was easy to understand for a non-medical person. I never felt pressured into taking any option and our meetings took place around 3 months apart, so I had time to really consider the decision. I decided to have Stapes surgery and the operation went smoothly. I was under sedation and local anaesthetic so it was a bit of a blur, but it took place in the morning and I was out by the afternoon. Joe replaced the third hearing bone of the ear with a metal prosthesis - and he even gave me the bone to keep! The immediate after effects of the surgery for me were some pain in my right ear which gradually subsided, and occasional dizziness which lasted 3-4 days. You also can't do intense exercise, take a flight, or get the ear wet for 6 weeks post surgery. I couldn't hear better immediately as a pack was placed in my ear for 2 weeks after the operation to support the healing process. When the pack was removed I did start to notice an immediate change in my hearing. This wasn't all smooth sailing however - I experienced a rather unpleasant experience at a sports event where the sounds of the crowd and the tannoy produced a rushing/whooshing sound in my ear, and sounded very distorted. I was quite concerned at this point that this would be a permanent side effect around loud noises, but Joe was kind enough to reassure me that this was my brain getting used to the increased noise exposure and that it would gradually adjust, which it did! I am still getting used to my amplified hearing, especially if I am in a bar or louder environment. I can definitely notice the benefit when I am listening to music through headphones or speaking through a computer headset. Before I would have to turn the volume up loudly as the sound would be muffled, and I also experienced a bit of pain in my right ear when doing this, which has now gone. My hearing is not as good as my left still, but the gap between my bone conduction hearing and my 'air' hearing has been successfully closed, so I am very happy with the result (an improvement of around 30 decibels). I have been told that sometimes hearing improves even further as time goes by. The tinnitus is still there - about the same as before - I think I just need to live with that. I only notice it during silence which is a good thing. To anyone considering getting Stapes surgery, I could not recommend Joe Manjaly more highly. I was quite anxious beforehand, but I felt that my concerns were listened to, he explained everything really clearly and above all is exceptionally skilled at this delicate procedure with an excellent success rate! I honestly couldn't have asked for a better surgeon or patient experience. Thank you Joe for everything!

I wanted to take this time to leave a review about Dr Manjaly and my experience of suffering with cholesteatoma, as there isn’t much out there about people’s experiences nor about cholesteatoma itself. May 2022, I had an appointment at the hospital. I was not expecting to hear anything about having a surgery or having some sort of ear condition. After being seen by a doctor, within seconds she had called Dr Manjaly to come into the room, to have a look in my both of my ears. After having a look in both ears he had told me that I had an abnormal non-cancerous growth of cyst inside my inner ear known as cholesteatoma. At this moment, I felt extremely upset, scared, and worried. I had all sorts of emotions. Words cannot describe how I felt. I knew I had something wrong with my ears but I was not expecting to hear that at that moment. I was not mentally prepared. Dr Manjaly had told me that he totally understands how I felt and that it is rare. If left untreated, it can damage structures inside your ear that’s essential for our hearing and balance. As well as other risks too. Dr Manjaly then had explained the whole process in extreme detail using an ear anatomy model. He told me that my inner ear will need to be reconstructed with titanium implant. At that moment I didn’t have many questions as I was traumatised by the news but he was extremely supportive and patient with me, whilst I was just crying, trying to take it all in! I was just extremely hesitant to undergo the surgery. August 2022 surgery day. Night before the operation, I couldn’t sleep at all. I wasn’t scared or worried. I was just extremely nervous. Didn’t know what was going to happen after the surgery and the impact the ear surgery was going to have on my appearance. I remember leaving my house and I kept talking to my husband and brother about Dr Manjaly. I kept telling them I am extremely nervous but on the other hand I am also the luckiest person in this world to have met a Dr like Manjaly and the fact that he was going to operate me. This thought had calmed my nerves down a lot! After having the operation, I was actually very surprised with how quickly I had recovered. The process was a speedy recovery for myself. However, the first 3 / 4 days were extremely important. I required support with everything. Moving around my house, getting to the toilet even trying to lay down on my bed. I had taken 3 weeks off work, to ensure that I was fully fit to return back to teaching. Up until the 7th week my hearing in my operated ear was poor. Suddenly, at work I heard a ping sound in my inner ear and my hearing had just suddenly came back! I am extremely grateful for Dr Manjaly for this outcome and would recommend without a second thought. He is fantastic at his job and has a great passion! He is simply fabulous. Top tips for those patients who are about to have a cholesteatoma surgery, as we didn’t know what to expect and what to buy: - Buy yourself a memory foam pillow. During your recovery process, sleeping elevated allows you to get a better sleep. - It was extremely important NOT to get the inner ear wet at all. I had bought myself a hair funnel to avoid any form of water travelling into my ears. I did not just rely on the funnel I had also used cotton wool and Vaseline to block my inner ear (as advised by Dr Manjaly). Just to summarise it all, Dr Manjaly is fantastic at his job. Very professional and approachable! YOU ARE SIMPLY THE BEST! Unfortunately, I have the same condition in my left ear. Fortunately, I have met a Dr like Dr Manjaly, so soon he will do his magic again!

I had a very positive experience with Dr Manjaly. After being referred to him last year and discovering the problems inside my ear, I was very hesitant to undergo surgery initially but can see now that it was the right decision to have made. Dr Manjaly was patient and thorough in his explanations and I knew I was in experienced and skilled hands throughout the surgery and recovery period. I am very grateful to him for this outcome and would recommend without a second thought.

Dr Manjaly is not only an excellent surgeon and a very professional doctor he is extremely kind and patient focused. I discovered that I had mixed hearing loss during the pandemic, something that came very much as a surprise. Dr Manjaly took me through different options to solve my issue. He never pushed for any invasive treatment and was very much ready to explore alternatives for me considering my life-style. I decided to go ahead with the stapedectomy for my otosclerosis. Dr Manjaly was able to perform this surgery under sedation without general anaesthesia (which was a plus for me). The procedure was very short and painless, the recovery was quick and Dr Manjaly was available throughout to answer my questions. The surgery was very successful and I am extremely thankful to him for having giving me my hearing back and a great quality of life!

    Patient seen for:
I have been very privileged once again to have my other ear operated on by Mr Joseph Manjaly and Team. I can honestly say I felt no pain after surgery, slightly dizzy and a bit nauseas for a few hours but this all subsided and I went home the same day. Two weeks on, and I could hardly contain my excitement when returning for my check up and waiting for the packing to be removed, knowing how good I will hear as I had previously found out from my first operation. Even after, my hearing seemed to improve more over the next 6-8 weeks. This has made a massive difference to my life especially where my work, family and friends are concerned, I can now hear softly spoken people, whereas before I would always struggle, especially with work colleagues asking them to repeat themselves constantly, sometimes I actually wouldn’t even include myself in there conversation for fear of making myself look silly, this was mentally draining for me having to concentrate so hard to listen, my hearing seemed to be deteriorating more and more over recent months, even whilst taking telephone calls I would struggle with certain low tone voices. But now I can actually say I hear every word being spoken. I can also hear sounds in the the distance like church bells ringing, children playing at school break times, the local football club team cheering, I haven’t been able to hear these sounds for years and you actually forget. These two operations have been life changing for me, and I am so grateful to Mr Manjaly, and so thankful that I was referred to one of the best consultants, (if not “The Best”). My operation’s have been a complete success, and I now have great hearing in both ears. I owe my new life to Mr Manjaly and would highly recommend his skilled expertise to anyone who is considering the same operation. The outcome is truly amazing.

    Explanation (5/5)
I have suffered with repeated ear infections and conductive hearing loss all of my life. Despite bilateral hearing aids, I found I was continually tired after concentrating hard on listening, especially at work. I knew my hearing was declining further, and at 35 years old this upset me hugely. So I did my research and found Mr. Manjaly! I also found that, on the NHS you can request to be referred to see a Consultant of your choice, even if you are under annual review locally. It took some serious badgering for my GP to refer me but once sent, I was offered a consultation with Mr. Manjaly very promptly. At consultation, I felt Mr. Manjaly really listened to my history, and understood how my hearing loss was affecting my life. I found his attitude very proactive and felt confident in his expertise. Following a scan, all treatment options were clearly presented to me, and risks outlined. We decided on an ossiculoplasty of my right ear under sedation as the best course of action, and Mr. Manjaly took care to demonstrate the procedure to me using an anatomical diagram of the ear. The operation went well and the whole team slick and professional. I recall Mr. Manjaly asking me if my hearing sounded louder mid-operation, which it did. I went back to my hotel the same day and a quick recovery followed. At my follow up hearing test 8 weeks later, an improvement of 50 decibels was found! This has been truly life changing, and I have not needed to wear my left hearing aid since. Everything from my energy levels to my posture has improved and I feel much less socially isolated. It is the small things too like hearing my cat purr, deciphering the mumblers and being better tuned to sound direction. The only downside is the discovery of my husband's snoring...but becoming a member of the 'did you hear that?' club is transformative for me. All I can say is thank you so much to Mr. Manjaly and team for absolutely outstanding treatment and a result better than I had hoped for. I would encourage anyone struggling with their hearing to book a consultation. I hope in the future to have the same operation on my left ear, and am confident that this will bring further improvement.
