Mr Thomas Routledge attended medical schools at Cambridge and then Oxford Universities, where he won scholarships in medical science. His surgical training was in Cambridge , London and New York. He was appointed as a Consultant in Thoracic Surgery at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals in 2007, where he is Chief of Thoracic Surgery. He is currently the senior thoracic surgeon at HCA London Bridge Hospital and helps lead their lung cancer multi-disciplinary team.
He has been at the forefront of developing robotic minimally invasive surgery working as an advisor and technology developer with Intuitive Surgical and the DaVinci robotic system. He has developed techniques that allow the majority of his patients to benefit from this more precise and also gentler way of doing surgery, widening the applicability of this technology to a wide range of situations and conditions. Whilst technical surgical excellence is the heart of his approach, Mr Routledge is very much focused on patient experience and support for patients' families during the challenging time that surrounds any surgical treatment, and has built a team at London Bridge Hospital and across HCA London to achieve this.

Mr.Routledge treated me for a recurring pneumothorax, to which I have had to resort to surgery (two months back). My partner and I consulted Mr.Routledge and I booked myself in for the surgery the week after. He is an extremely knowledgeable and experienced doctor (utilising robotics), diligent and caring in parallel. I am very grateful to have found a surgeon with experience of catamenial pneumothorax. He explains my situation before /after surgery very clearly and is always happy to help should I have any questions. As I was eventually treated (keyhole surgery) for catemenial pneumothorax combined with the need for pleurodesis, recovery time is gradual, but I am extremely glad to have chosen Mr Routledge as my surgeon in this process.

It was an absolute pleasure to see Mr Routledge again 7 years after my chest surgery. I had some discomfort in my sternum after a friend was too vigorous in helping me out of a chair and suspected that a couple of the wires in my chest had broken. Mr Routledge allayed my concerns of any serious damage and we agreed that as I could live with the occasional discomfort, it was best to leave them alone. I left his office feeling relieved and reassured.

I underwent a robotic lung lobectomy by Mr Routledge on 11/04/2023 I researched robotic lung surgeons, in order to secure the best surgeon for my case. (Lung tumour removal) Mr Routledge was my choice and, now 9 days pst operatively, and almost back to normal.. I can only credit a huge part of this good outcome to his expertise, as a thoracic robotic lung surgeon. (Although I am aware he is highly experienced in other surgical thiracics (Not just robotic) It is important to me that practitioners show understanding and compassion, in tandem with their medical skills, and Mr Routledge did. He communicates clearly, no arrogance what so ever, and was more than willing to answer my endless list of questions. He visited me every day of my 4 day stay at London Bridge (HCA) His secretary Louise Fu has also been excellent in terms of responding to my e mails in a kind and competent manner. My experience was faultless and, in spite of my having required lung cancer surgery, I feel blessed to have chosen Mr Routledge.
