Mr Sunil J Amonkar

Mr. Sunil Amonkar is a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon with extensive experience in breast and reconstructive surgery. He qualified from Newcastle University in 2001 and completed his surgical training in Yorkshire and the North East. He trained in all the major breast screening units in our region, gaining great experience in the assessment and management of breast cancer and benign conditions.

Prior to becoming a consultant, he was appointed to a national advanced Training Interface Group (TIG) reconstructive and cosmetic fellowship. These fellowships are of limited numbers being approved by the General Medical Council. This was undertaken at the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and private hospitals in the Yorkshire region where he learned additional techniques in surgery and enhancing patient care.

Mr. Amonkar began his consultant role as an Oncoplastic Breast and General Surgeon at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in 2013. In 2016, he was appointed as a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, where he now focuses exclusively on breast surgery. With a busy NHS and private practice, he has treated over two thousand cases and frequently shares his expertise and experiences with patients and breast cancer support groups.

He is actively involved in research as a Principal Investigator for studies conducted through the National Institute for Health and Care Research and has supported numerous trials throughout his career, ensuring he remains up to date with current medical evidence and best clinical practice. Mr. Amonkar is also passionate about medical education, serving as a surgical lead for medical students, an examiner for Newcastle Medical School, and a faculty tutor for current surgical trainees. Additionally, he holds a formal postgraduate qualification in Medical Education (PGCME) from Newcastle University.

Mr. Amonkar also has a keen interest in service improvement and delivering high quality healthcare. He has completed a Masters of Business Administration (MBA with Merit) from Sunderland University with a focus on healthcare management. Working with his team, he actively listens and responds to patient feedback striving to further improve patient experience.

Mr. Amonkar specialises in all conditions related to benign and malignant breast disease and incorporates techniques from cosmetic and reconstructive surgery to improve cosmetic outcome following surgery.

Outside of work, he enjoys sports, particularly running and cycling and has used these activities to raise funds and awareness for our local breast cancer charities.
