About Mr Sam Dutta
Dr Smarajit Dutta is Consultant General Surgeon specialising in advanced keyhole surgery. He has considerable experience treating gallbladder and hernia problems, particularly in fixing hernias that have failed several repairs in the past.
His main interests are incisional hernia repair, laparoscopic hernia repair, kidney donation and transplant outcome. Dr Dutta was trained in University hospitals in Cambridge, Birmingham, Nottingham and Plymouth and completed UK Specialist Surgical Training (CCST) in 2006. He became a Consultant Surgeon in Portsmouth since 2008 and after years with the NHS he began private practice in 2011 with Spire Portsmouth Hospitals.
Sam went on further to train in solid organ transplantation, practicing adult and paediatric kidney transplantation and dialysis surgery in Nottingham University Hospital. He is credited with starting and leading laparoscopic kidney donation in Portsmouth and is enthusiastic about promoting organ donation and living kidney donations.
Laparoscopic hernia surgery has been Dr. Dutta's passion for the last 20 years and he has become a sought-after trainer in keyhole surgery including Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy and cholangiogram.
Outside his busy surgical practice, Sam takes keen interest in fine arts. Some of his works are available to view on his finearts website and in one art Gallery in Manchester.

I recently went in to have a complex eipgastric hernia repair surgery in August 2026. I recently surgery for an inguinal hernia and was fortunate to have Mr Sam Dutta perform the operation, Mr Dutta is an excellent surgeon who prior to surgery explained everything in detail and put me at ease. Following the operation he came to see me every day while I was in hospital to speak with me and the nursing eam and monitor my recovery. I have had my follow up consultation and am very happy moving forward following the surgery
