Mr Ranjit Deshpande is a senior consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery at King's College Hospital, where he has been based since 2007. He is highly specialised in Minimally Invasive (Keyhole) Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, in addition to general cardiothoracic surgery. He is also a key member of King's "Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation" (TAVI) programme.
Mr Deshpande is renowned for using bilateral internal mammary arteries for coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) to achieve near-total arterial re-vascularisation in ischemic heart disease. Furthermore, he is internationally recognised for performing endoscopic CABG as a "beating heart" procedure without opening the sternum.
Following his training in the South-East Thames London Cardiothoracic Surgical Programme, Mr Deshpande earned a prestigious scholarship from the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons to work at OLV Zeinkenhaus, Belgium to study port-access endoscopic mitral valve repair surgery for mitral valve prolapse. He became a Senior Registrar in Advanced Aortic & Robotic Cardiac Surgery at London's Royal Brompton Hospital in 2006.
Mr Deshpande is a key member of the South London Cardiac Network's complex major aortic surgery group, which is specifically created for aortic root and aortic dissection surgery. Additionally, he is the founder and treasurer of the British and Irish Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery.
Outside of the hospital, Mr Deshpande enjoys spending his free time with his family, going to the theatre, and playing cricket.

Very well explained and took the time with us to make sure our questions were answered
A great result and a new lease of life for me. First class organisation and treatment to iron out a minor setbacks following surgery. Immense skill along with a very reassuring and cheerful manner. Liz Deane also went above and beyond sorting out appointments and ridiculous medical insurance issues.
What can I say? He repaired my heart with a degree of flair and panache that every patient deserves.
Happily explained what my drugs were for and set a plan to gradually reduce my reliance on them and pass the information on to my NHS cardiologist.
I had total confidence in the advice given by Mr. Deshpande prior to the surgery and I don't think I could have had better treatment anywhere in the country.
Clearly a leader in his field, he initiated actions as required, was highly empathetic and encouraging. He called on other specialists where appropriate and filled me with confidence that I would be fine, although facing the most challenging health scare of my life.
I am deeply thankful for the excellent care I received during my mitral heart valve replacement surgery by Mr. Ranjit Deshpande. He is highly skilled, caring professional & reassuring throughout the entire process. My surgery went very well & recovery has been positive too. I would strongly recommend Mr Ranjit Deshpande as a surgeon in a heart beat !!
Mr Ranjit was fantastic. His explanation of my heart defect was very informative. I felt at ease and confident that Mr Ranjit is the right surgeon for my operation.
Mr Deshpande is not only an excellent surgeron but has a relaxing manner and explains everything very well. i have had a rapid recovery from a minimally invasive mitral valve replacment and back to normal in only a few weeks
