Mr Krishna Singh

Dr Krishna Singh is a
Consultant General Surgeon with extensive experience, specialising in upper
gastrointestinal surgery. He completed his basic surgical training on the
Norfolk and Norwich rotation and achieved accreditation in his specialist
training in Scotland. Dr Singh further advanced his expertise by undertaking a
Royal College of Surgeons Fellowship at the University of California, San
Francisco, where he honed his skills in laparoscopic surgery. His career also
took him to the National Cancer Centre in Tokyo, Japan, where he gained
significant experience in upper GI cancer surgery. In 2005, Mr. Singh further
expanded his knowledge by spending several weeks at Osaka University Hospital
in Japan, gaining experience in minimally invasive oesophageal surgery.  

In 2001 he carried out the
first laparoscopic surgery to remove cancer of the stomach in the UK. He was
invited to various cancer centres in the UK and Europe to carryout minimally
invasive cancer surgery for cancers of the stomach.  Dr Singh’s work in minimally invasive surgery
has greatly contributed to the adoption of these procedures, and he has
published papers and presented them at numerous conferences. In
2002 he presented an award-winning paper on laparoscopic bypass surgery for palliation
of obstructing cancers of the stomach and pancreas at the AESGBI annual
conference.  

During the 2004 IDS
congress at Yokohama, he presented the concept of ‘ischaemic preconditioning’
of the gastric conduit and ‘staged’ procedure for patients undergoing surgery
for oesophageal cancer. This was a novel innovation presented to the
international surgical fraternity for the first time. He has presented and
published papers on several innovations including: operative intervention employing
a combined endoscopic and laparoscopic approach to remove GIST tumours of the
stomach and operative technique to place feeding jejunostomy tube during
staging laparoscopy for patients diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. Over the
years, Dr Krishna Singh has introduced more than seventeen minimally invasive
procedures to the hospital trusts where he has worked as a consultant. 

Dr Singh has for a long
time promoted principles of carrying out safe laparoscopic gallbladder surgery.
His paper on carrying out subtotal laparoscopic cholecystectomy for patients
presenting with gallstones, associated with anatomy suggestive of ‘Mirizzi’
syndrome, has been cited in more than hundred peer reviewed articles. 

Over the years, he has held
several clinical leadership roles including serving as the clinical director
for surgical specialties at the legacy Western Sussex Hospitals Foundation
Trust and at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals.  

A
passionate educator, Dr Krishna Singh has been involved in teaching and
training throughout his career. He served as a surgical tutor for the Royal
College of Surgeons and as Vice Chairman of Basic Surgical Training for Kent,
Surrey, and Sussex. Additionally, he has played an active role in national
surgical societies and is currently serving on the council of the Association
of Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ALRSGBI). 

In
the past Dr Singh has been on the Council of Association of Surgeons of Great
Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) for more than ten years. During the early years of his
career, he was on the council of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal
Surgeons (AUGIS)> He is currently the Regional Representative for Southeast England
and the ‘Patient safety Lead’ for ALRSGBI. He continues to serve as the Quality
Assurance Assessor for the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
