About Professor James Patrick Byrne
Professor James Byrne is a general and bariatric surgeon practicing at Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital and Spire Southampton Hospital. He completed a BSc in Medical Sciences (Honours) in Physiology at the University of St Andrews in 1986, followed by his medical degree (MB ChB) from the University of Manchester Medical School in 1989. He was awarded an MD by the University of Manchester in 1998.
Professor Byrne was appointed Consultant Surgeon at University Hospital Southampton in 2002, following surgical training in the North West of England and completion of a fellowship at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. In parallel with his clinical role, he serves as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Southampton.
His specialist practice includes bariatric and weight loss surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery, hiatus hernia, and conditions affecting the oesophagus and stomach, including malignancy. He also performs a wide range of laparoscopic procedures, including cholecystectomy, hernia repair, and anti-reflux surgery. Professor Byrne has been a long-standing member of the Southampton bariatric surgical team, which has performed more than 2,000 bariatric procedures since its establishment in 2004.
Outside of clinical practice, his interests include walking, sailing, golf, skiing, and reading.
