About Mr Ian Hunt

I am a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon with a highly specialised practice focused on chest wall deformities and complex chest wall and rib conditions. My work centres in particular on pectus excavatum, pectus carinatum, chest wall asymmetry, and complex or mixed pectus deformities, including patients who have undergone previous chest wall surgery or experienced suboptimal outcomes or complications following earlier procedures.

My specialist clinical practice is reflected in my work through the Pectus Clinic and the Rib Injury Clinic, which focus exclusively on the assessment and management of complex chest wall deformity and rib pathology. Through this highly focused practice, I regularly receive referrals from across the UK and internationally, including patients seeking expert opinion for complex or revision cases.

I frequently assess patients with long-standing, complex or previously treated conditions, many of whom have found it difficult to obtain clear explanations or consistent advice elsewhere. I place a strong emphasis on careful clinical assessment, clear communication and providing honest, evidence-based guidance tailored to each individual patient.

My approach is centred on helping patients fully understand their diagnosis and the full range of management options available. Not all chest wall or rib conditions require surgery, and in many cases reassurance, monitoring or non-operative treatment is the most appropriate course. Where surgical treatment is considered, I take time to explain the potential benefits, limitations and risks in detail, and to ensure expectations are realistic and well aligned before any decisions are made.

I have extensive experience in the assessment and management of both adult and adolescent patients and work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues where appropriate. I aim to provide a calm, supportive consultation environment in which patients feel listened to, comfortable asking questions, and able to make informed decisions about their care.

Patients often value my thoroughness, clear explanations and balanced approach to decision-making. My goal is to ensure each patient feels informed, supported and confident in the plan agreed, whether that involves surgery, non-operative management or reassurance alone.

From the initial consultation, Dr Hunt demonstrated a deep understanding of the condition and took the time to explain all available options in a clear and reassuring manner. What stood out most was his kindness, smiles and professionalism, attention to detail, and genuine commitment to achieving the best possible outcome. We recently had a consultation following Alfie’s surgery, and both Alfie and myself (his mum) felt very reassured by the experience. Mr Hunt spoke to us in a clear and straightforward way, explaining everything carefully, including the next steps in recovery and what to expect over the coming weeks. They made sure Alfie was included in the conversation, which really helped him feel at ease and involved in his own care. There was plenty of time given for questions, and nothing felt rushed. It was also evident that there is a strong, positive working relationship with the nursing staff and wider team, and Mr Hunt was generous in praising the work of colleagues. That sense of teamwork was reassuring to see. We were also grateful for the honest but calm discussion around potential complications. While these were explained clearly, it was done in a way that didn’t cause alarm and instead helped us feel informed and reassured. The plan to see Alfie again for follow-up checks also provided additional confidence that any issues will be closely monitored. Overall, we left feeling well-informed, supported, and reassured about Alfie’s recovery process.

My experience with Mr. Hunt involved the Nuss bar procedure to fix my pectus excavatum. I was well informed about the procedure ahead of time, but his expertise still surpassed anything I had encountered in both results and emotional support. Since this was my first surgery, and a significant one, I felt confident and safe with Mr. Hunt performing the operation. He was professional, reassuring, and supportive throughout the entire process. I would certainly recommend him to anyone close to me.
