Mr Gareth Harper

Gareth Harper specialises in Shoulder and Elbow surgery and has a particular interest in arthroscopic surgery. He has been working in Portsmouth and Hampshire as a full time Consultant (on the NHS and privately) since 1999. He is a fully accredited, fellowship trained Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon who has published widely in peer reviewed journals.

Gareth Harper was born in 1962 and completed his Medical training at Oxford following undergraduate training at Cambridge University. He was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1992 receiving specialist Orthopaedic accreditation in 1996. He then worked as a trainee at the Internationally recognised Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore, London before completing his specialist training as The Shoulder and Elbow Fellow with Prof. Sonnabend in Sydney, Australia. He took up his Consultant post at Portsmouth in 1999 and has developed and expanded the Shoulder service since then.

Awards

 He was awarded an Exhibition in medicine at Cambridge, and a Blackwell Scholarship at Oxford University. 

He was elected to an AO Trauma Fellowship to Austria in 1995, a British Orthopaedic Travelling Fellowship in 1997 and a European Society Travelling fellowship in 1999. 

Clinical Work

He has a particular interest in Arthroscopic Surgery, and regularly performs the following procedures;

·  Open Surgery and Joint Replacement

·  Latest Arthroscopic Techniques for instability and  impingement

·  Shoulder and Elbow surgery for Sport related problems.

·  Arthritis

·  Frozen Shoulders

·  Rotator Cuff Tears

·  Acromioclavicular joint problems

·  Calcific tendonitis
