About Mr Edward Powell-Smith
Mr Edward Powell-Smith was appointed as a Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon at Harrogate District Hospital in 2013. Since taking up this position, he has continued to develop his expertise in the complex relationship between anatomy and function that makes treating hand and wrist problems both challenging and unique.
He completed extensive specialist registrar training in hand surgery, followed by advanced fellowship training in both orthopaedic and plastic surgery. His fellowships included time at the renowned Chelsea and Westminster Hand Surgery Unit and as a British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) Fellow at the St Andrews Centre for Plastic Surgery at Broomfield Hospital.
Mr Powell-Smith undertakes all aspects of hand and wrist surgery, managing conditions such as nerve entrapment, arthritis, and injuries requiring both operative and non-operative interventions. He believes that successful outcomes in hand surgery come from selecting the right solution for each individual patient, focusing on maintaining function while minimising discomfort.
He has a particular interest in small joint replacement for painful arthritis within the hand, including MCP (metacarpophalangeal), PIP (proximal interphalangeal), and DIP (distal interphalangeal) joint replacements. Mr Powell-Smith is dedicated to providing personalised care that helps restore hand and wrist function and improve quality of life for his patients.

Today was my second follow-up after my surgery in August. As always, my consultant was relaxed and friendly. I have been extremely impressed with his expertise on my hand and he has guided me well and in detail through the recovery period. He listened attentively and addressed all my concerns. I left the consultation with a high degree of confidence in my continuing recovery.

The appointment before my surgery was really helpful and put my mind at ease. We talked through what the operation involved, the benefits, pain relief and what to expect on the day, as well as recovery afterwards. I came away feeling informed and confident, knowing what was going to happen and what I needed to do afterwards. Having everything explained beforehand made the whole experience much less daunting.
Mr Powell-Smith listened to me and made me feel at ease. He helped diagnose and treat my issue and I felt the whole experience was positive.
An extremely professional service. My treatment plan was well explained and carried out with the utmost skill, care and compassion.
Mr Powel-Smith provided with just the right amount of information I needed to understand my condition and made sure I was aware of all the options for treatment. He had a very pleasant manner and I felt fully at ease.
