About Mr Edward Powell-Smith
Mr Edward Powell-Smith was appointed as a Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon at Harrogate District Hospital in 2013. Since taking up this position, he has continued to develop his expertise in the complex relationship between anatomy and function that makes treating hand and wrist problems both challenging and unique.
He completed extensive specialist registrar training in hand surgery, followed by advanced fellowship training in both orthopaedic and plastic surgery. His fellowships included time at the renowned Chelsea and Westminster Hand Surgery Unit and as a British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) Fellow at the St Andrews Centre for Plastic Surgery at Broomfield Hospital.
Mr Powell-Smith undertakes all aspects of hand and wrist surgery, managing conditions such as nerve entrapment, arthritis, and injuries requiring both operative and non-operative interventions. He believes that successful outcomes in hand surgery come from selecting the right solution for each individual patient, focusing on maintaining function while minimising discomfort.
He has a particular interest in small joint replacement for painful arthritis within the hand, including MCP (metacarpophalangeal), PIP (proximal interphalangeal), and DIP (distal interphalangeal) joint replacements. Mr Powell-Smith is dedicated to providing personalised care that helps restore hand and wrist function and improve quality of life for his patients.
